Hello to everyone, I have only been researching my family history for about five weeks so as you can imagine I am a complete novice. However, I have been reading the tips board and may I say how totally impressed I am with all your knowledge, I have gained some very useful tips from you all. Now comes the grovelling bit please can anyone tell me before I go and buy a marriage certificate if there is a way to find out the maiden name of a gt grandmother. Her name was Esmerelda (no she wasn't married to Quasi) she was married to Robert Arthur Astin in Burnley in 1885 vol 8e p 317 sept quarter. I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you. Take care and keep smiling. Regards Margaret x |

Normally a click on the Page No. would give you the answer - pity this one there are two grooms and only one bride. Unless someone has other idea it looks like another cert !! Astin is not that common a name, is it ? |

The two main ways to find out the maiden name are 1. from the birth certificate of a child, 2. from her marriage certificate. Unfortunately either way involve some expense! Its worth it though when that certificate comes! It can sometimes be possible to work out the maiden name by other people living with the family at censuses. Its not completely foolproof though. You could also look on UKBMD, click on SelectCounty, then Lancashire. Although not complete, if they HAVE transcribed the marriage, you will get her maiden name. Good luck Marjorie |
