thankyou think this is a brickwall i know the mother and son were both born in norfolk, quite away from where i live, so getting to the records offices would be quite hard, thanks anyway, will maybe have to wait Julie

i know when the child was older the father recognised him and gave him a yearly allowance, but everything was done legal so not to give away the fathers identity, until 100 yrs after his death, the papers are all held with the law society in hull, and are due to be released in 2017, quite a long wait, wondered if we could find out before. dont know where the papers would be kept if he admitted his was the father Julie

If you Googal Basterdy bonds you get dozens of hits. Most are county sites as I think you will find they are kept in local record offices. So find out were she lived and do a look up there.

Only if the real father admitted responsibility were bastardy bonds used. If she was a 'servant girl', who's to say that they didn't suggest that she slept around and therefore couldn't possibilty know who the father was. My great grandmother was born out of wedlock, as were her siblings (in Ireland) and their father(s) were never made to pay for their upkeep.
