The search result is <surname> Thought someone may know what the brackets are about before I check my local LDS on Tuesday:) Thanks

I think it could mean that the name is 'possibly' what is inside the brackets. It may be hard to read, and has been compared with similar names. Paul

Don't know if its any help, but when entering names on my tree, I put the married name of women whose maiden name is unknown in parenthesis so they are easily identifiable to me.

I guess this is a submission from a church member or a tree submitter. It means 'not sure'. The IGI taken from parish records are reliable (Ive double checked and they all come up ok) but the submissions, as mentioned many times on here, often leave a lot to be desired in the accuracy field!

I've found results in that format on the IGI extracted records when both parents surnames were on the baptism entry. I guess the transcriber has then put the fathers surname in brackets as he is not sure which surname the child was actually known by.
