Hi Helen You will not believe this i have just found out that Miss N Smith was infact called Helen, but called herself Nell Her address was in england, Haslemere. Alex Pasfield Address when he left the Army in 1918 was 126, Shuter Street, Toronto. But he may have come back to England after awhile. I cannot seem to find any record of where he was when he died (UK or Canada). |

Hi Jackie What a great mystery. Was Miss Smith's address in Canada or England? It makes you wonder if she was expecting his child when he changed the details of his next of kin. |

Hi Nell I sent off for his army records from Canada and written right across his discharge paper was DECEASED 1952. But don't not say where, but i do have his address in canada where he was living after the army. He may have stayed there untill the end of his days or he may have come back to England, I can't find any death cert for him, only birth and marriage to Florence saunders who was my mothers grandmother. Alexander Pasfield is my Great, Granfather on my mothers side.In 1909 he left england and sailed to canada in search of work leaving his wife and 5 young children behind planning to send for them when he was settled. From there he went to chicago and worked for Marshall wards as a carpenter. He took up lodgings in Van buren street and was sending money home every week to his family and writing long leters 2/3 times a week still making plans about sending for them when he was more settled. Now this is where it went wrong. In 1911 the letters stopped and completely disapeared and it as always been a mystery to the family what happened. My Great Grandmother always believed he must have been in a fatal accident and died and that he would not have deserted her. Well we have finally tracked him down . It seems that he joined the canadian army in 1915. On the army papers he has said he was single and his mother was next of kin. He then had it changed to Miss N Smith,Furance Place, about 1917/1918.She is down as a friend. So this is where i am up to and am trying to find out what i can about this lady.Who knows there could be family members who knew of them through stories being told over the years. i know he did not die until 1952 but i don't know in what country there is no record anywhere. So you see after coming this far in the search for him i'm not ready to end it yet. A lot has happened between 1918/1952 for him to have left a trail i'm sure. So i would be very grateful for any ideas that you could give me to what to try next. |
