Lots of antiquarian, records or family history societies have published volumes of the allegations or the bonds. These volumes usually only cover the period up to 1837. The originals would be either in the County or the Diocesan Record Office. What they contain varies by area and period. At best, you can get ages, marital status, parish and occupations, name of bondsman and the name of guardian where appropriate. At worst, no more than is given in the parish register. While many allegations survive, not all do. |

Have a look on the English Origins site, I know I found information on there a year or so back. (sorry can't remember exact web address, try googling) Think it cost about £5 to order a copy of the Marriage Allegation. Because the bride was under 21 her father had to give consent in writing, so of course I got his name. Also states which Parish bride and groom were living in. |

Most licences would have been handed over to the minister performing the marriage and then lost. However, the county records office may hold the marriage allegation and/or the marriage bond. |

I have found a marriage in a parish register and it says by licence rather than after banns. How can I find the licence? Do they still exist? Then again what would it tell me? Jane |
