Can anyone advise me where i can go to find out if my grandmother was adopted or at least born with a different name.I cannot find her birth entry at all. Thanks in advance Lynda

Lynda Because you can't find her birth, doesn't necessarily mean she was adopted. Where have you looked and for which years? What is the name you have for her? nell

Hi Lynda If she was born before 1927 then there was no such thing as formal adoption. She could well have been taken in by another family who changed her name. Even after 1927 you would need to know her name at birth to be able to obtain a copy of her birth certificate and that may not be the same as the name you knew her by! Or she may not have been adopted at all Lou

Give us her name,an idea where and when she was born and see if anyone with eagle eyes can spot her jess

hi just read your replies. Thanks. The only info I have is : ESME JANE JONES aged 25 married in 1940. She gave her address as 62. Jones Street, Phillipstown, New Tredegar, Monmouthshire. Any help is greatly received. Cheers Lynda

i have serached 1915 and first qtr of 1916 in 1837 but as you can imagine with surname of Jones there were alot! Don't have any more ideas of where to look. Help!!

how will you know when you have found her? do you know where she was born? Does she have any children that might know

Hi Jess Until recently had assumed that she was born where she was married. What an idiot I must be! Nothing seems clear cut in this game! When I last looked had gained her second marriage certificate and death certificate and have taken names from the witnesses and father to work with. What I have ended up with COULD be right.See what you make from these bits. First marriage: details as first mentioned plus father was Humphrey Jones and was a witness Second marriage:In Poole DOrset. which is where her first husband came from and I know for fact is where she lived from at least 1943 until she died in 29/10/1966. Witness at this wedding was Sarah Jane Jones and by then father deceased. I then hoped this might of been her mother so did bmd for humphrey Jones marriage in Bedwellty which is the reg.area for new tredegar and it gave me 1909 marriage for Humphrey Jones and Sarah Jane Jenkins formely Coward. So on this info checked all births anyname Joneson 1837 maiden name of mother as Coward or Goward (the reason for that was I had traced her family on census forms and both had been used). I also have this certificate which gives me a sister as a witness and that fits on the census' I have also checked on 1837 for all Humphrey JOnes marriages from 1911 onwards where partners names are listed and can be checked for christain names and have not found anyother match Of course all this could be wrong if Sarah was a sister or an aunt . Help i think i'm going mad ! lol Lynda

Missed the last line of your message. Can't trace any other child ,only that she had a girl that was adopted. Born in 1943 that was my mum. Lynda
