On the census/certificates, someone called martha could they really be called Mary Ann or just mary. Like someone really being called Sarah Ann but being know to family as Annie. Steve

I would think it a bit unlikely as Martha is a name in itself rather than a nickname, unless their middle name was Martha of course.

I would have thought that Martha was a name in it's own right too. Kath. x

Steve, They could be anything!! If all the other family members names, dates etc match up, chances are she didn't like her name!! I spent months looking for my G Grandmother - Amelia, only to find her name was Agnes Amelia. He sister, known as Bella was actually Beatrice Ethnelreda. My grandfather on the other side was Sidney on his marriage cert and my gran's birth cert, but I couldn't find his birth, or find him in the 1891 census, so I tried to trace his brother Frederick - still no luck. I thought he had another brother called Sylvanus (there aren't many of those around!) - found him!! Sidney's real name was Gilford, and Frederick's was Ivan!!! maggie

My grandmother was called Martha, so this is a real name. I understand how frustrating it is looking up census returns! My fathers grandmother's surname was McGee, but on 1881 census listed as McGhie. I hope u find what u r looking 4. Regards, Heidi
