My mother was a Bertha - not short for anything.

Thanks for that, She appears on 1861 census, then no more!! not on a census or death record!! Never mind, she is only a side shoot, so to speak. Suex

It's possible she married. Or perhaps she had more than one name? I have a gt gt aunt called Prudence Elizabeth who is just Elizabeth on a census, but Prudence Elizabeth on her baptism and marriage records. nell

The Bertha in my tree was always a Bertha - except for 1901 when she was a Birtha.

I know a lot of my ancestors (and even present day relations) used their Middle names rather than their Christian names - could be that Bertha didn't always call herself that? Good luck Kaye x
