According to "google" there is a Warrington, Lancashire AND a Warrington, Cheshire. A distant relative gave me information about our ancestors coming from Warrington, Lancashire. But now, I'm finding information about Warrington, Cheshire. Does anyone know: are these two difference cities? Thank you.

Thank you, Brenda. I'll have to reestablish contact with "Diane" to find out if we're from Lancashire or Cheshire. I would think it would be Cheshire, as my ancestor married someone from Frodsham, Cheshire. Thank you so much for your help! Emma: just saw your posting. Oh my! I REALLY have to contact Diane. Thank you both very, very much for your help. I'm off now to reread your information, Emma, thank you!!

I think it moved from Lancs to Cheshire with the boundary changes of 1974.

Thank you, Geoff. I haven't researched this side of the family, because someone else had, so I'm not familiar with the area. Now I'm interested! Thank you for your help, Geoff.

Geoff is correct - I remember it vividly, as a dear friend who was born in Warrington was mortified at the change. She was, and still is, a very proud Lancastrian. Rosemary

in the 70's there were a lot of changes-Cheshire used to include the Wirral-but that is now a metropolitan borough. I asumed we had about 33 counties, but youll find that isnt the case anymore-more like 80!!! A mixture of metropolitan counties and shire counties. The problems start when looking for older records ,say parish records-they are often kept in the record offices concerned with the original county, regardless of recent boundary changes. so ,in short theres a good chance that old records are not kept in chester CRO for Warrington, despite it now being in Cheshire.

Also, whilst I remember, Parish records in Cheshire CRO are duplicated in many instances for viewing in Manchester Central Library.
