That's a very good question Sarah, lol!

It's now a place in it's own right, but it used to be in Avon. That doesn't exist now as a county, and some of the outer areas of Bristol are now in South Gloucestershire.

Someone who lives in Bristol might have more detailed info.

Mandy :)

I think its classed as Somerset now, but I still think of it as Avon, and I think its still known as Bristol & Avon.

No, it's not in Somerset although it does border it.

For the purposes of the 1861 census, Bristol was classed as being in Gloucestershire.

In 1858 I think Gloucestershire.

But the records will be held at Bristol Record Office.

don't know - Bristolshire?

Didn't listen in geography - I remember a teacher asking me if he was going to see my book this term and I told him calmly,

"No Sir, I don't think so"

!!!

I can't believe i was that cheeky now!

Surely it has to be in a county though?

Lancaster and Preston are cities and they are in Lancashire.

I think it may have been in Gloucestershire back then - I don't think Avon existed. (It's like Merseyside - I have ancestors who came from a place called Lydiate. 100 years ago it was in Lancashire, now it's in Merseyside. As is Southport, I think.)

Regarding what Abigail says - what confuses me about Lancaster and Preston is that Preston seems to be the major city of the two (at least, I know the law courts are there and the county records) but I think Lancaster is still seen as the "county town".

Hi Sarah

If you are looking at the are of Bedminster,in the 1800's Bedminster which is now in Bristol came under Somerset. Bristol came under Gloucestershire.

Tina is correct!

Driving into Bristol on the A4, a sign said 'Welcome to the City and County of Bristol' when we used to visit Grandma back in the 1950's.

In fact it still might be there. I know it was a few years ago.

The City of Bristol used to come under Gloucestershire and the outskirts/villages, before they got swallowed up and became part of the city, came under the various counties that surrounded the area. Eg., Somerset and Gloucestershire in the case of Bristol.

Then came the dreaded Avon County...what a fiasco that was....and a waste of money.
