I have been using Firefox with Adblock for quite some time, but I still get adverts on here. The one that comes at the top has a tab on it that says "Block" which if I click that the advert goes away. But then when I click from one board to another it just appears again. So how do you stop the adverts showing? I can't be bothered to click on the block tab every time I change screens. And there is no tab on the adverts that appear on the side.
I have read several times, especially over the last couple of days that if you use Firefox you don't get adverts but it has never stopped them for me.
Mant thanks

Mary, as I have only had Firefox for a couple of days, I wonder if there has been an update to the adblocker since you put it on, may be worth having a look.

Mine is called adblock plus

under preferences on the red ABP sign I had added a filter list, I don't know if this made any difference.

Hi Rosalind,
I also have adblock + ( I thought I had hit the + key) there are no updates I just checked. even before all this trojan stuff started a couple of days ago I have read on here and other forums that if you use firefox and adblock you get no adverts. I have a filter list which if I click on the block tab it opens the list and I click OK, but they still come back when I change screens. I read on a thread last night that someone has no adverts at all on here so how is it done?

Mary,

Try this (I cannot promise - I have had stuff set up for years and things just happen - or not - so I am kind of in the dark myself). This is what I would do.

Nosing around this morning on account of the Errclean farrago reported to me by my wife, I found that at least since my PC's sickness a week or two back, I have no firefox extensions on my home machine.

On the Firefox menu, select Tools / Add-ons. In the new window that appears, bottom right select Get extensions. This will open a new tab (or page depending on your Firefox settings). Toward the bottom is a group entitled Popular extensions. In there, click on Adblock Plus.

Follow the prompts to install it. You will get an octagonal red sign like a stop sign appear on the toolbar labelled ABP (Ad Block Plus).

Since Sue asked me to check whether we were protected currently flitting around GR, I have personally been unable to replicate any of the problems. It doesn't mean they are not there, but so long as she does not click on any button demanding that she install unrequested software, I have no worries.

Hope this helps. If not, somebody cleverer than I will be along shortly.

;o)

Hi William,
I have always had it installed, but I have also been rather disappointed with it as in my experience it does not do what it claims to do. I have read through the help files and tried various things but it does not stop adverts, I have the same problem on other web sites as well. But there are people on here who say they have no adverts at all.

Hi Mary, did you subscribe to any filter lists when you installed adblock? It will show on your preferences if you did. I just have the easy List and at the moment no adverts.

Link for the lists is http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

You might find some help here

I have Adbock plus and do not see a single advert on this site.
I also use face Book and it blocks 99% of adverts on there as well.
Williams advice on how to find it should work

Mary,

Having thought about it, my main concern in your case is whether maybe the "stuff" is already on your computer. It might be worth you following Errol's instructions on how to clear it.

Unfortunately, every PC is different and really am a part-timer here so I do not know the full story.

Not much help. Sorry

Thanks to all for your replies, especially Rosalind for the link for the easy list, I have now subscribed and all ads have gone it works on Ancestry as well which will make things quicker. Can I ask how you found out about the list as OH is always checking on new add ons for firefox and he has never seen anything about it. I will pass it on to my daughters as they both use Facebook.
William, thanks for your concern but I have not had any of the problems that people have been describing on here I have been using computers for years and have never had a virus or any nasties of any kind (touch wood)
Once again many thanks.

Hi Mary, I found out about the list when installing the adblocker, it asked it I wanted to subscribe to any of the lists, I had a look to see what they were about, figured nothing ventured and hey presto it worked!!

Pleased you are now fixed and ad free.

I have been using Firefox for a few days also and do not get any ads at all !
This is what I do to get rid of them - click on ABP arrow at top right of browser, click on preferences then click on add filter.
If you then run your mouse over the ad you want to get rid of you will see the url appear in bottom left of screen, type in part of that name - ie doubleclick or atdmt or likewise then click ok. That should then get rid of all ads from that url. When visiting another website you may find banners which you can add to your filter list.

Hi Laptop Dancer,
I have in the past done as you suggest but then figured that I was spending more time doing that than actually getting any research done. If you copy the link that Rosalind has posted above and click on the subscribe link and then OK in the window that opens then they will all be gone in one fell swoop.
Rosalind,
It was OH who installed Firefox on my laptop, he has used Firefox a lot longer than me and kept onto me that I should use it but the reason I wouldn't is because the viewer on Ancestry didn't work. I then read somewhere that it had been sorted so thought I would give Firefox a go. I was going to install it later that day as I was just about to go out so he offered to do it for me, he says he remembers seeing the thing asking if he wanted to subscribe but he clicked no. I have done it on my desktop computer as well now.
