Dawn, we told our 17-y-o to write down a list of what she likes and after several months(!) she did just that. She's been told that if what we have for tea isn't on her list, she'll have to sort herself out. I usually text her in the morning to tell her if that's the case, and it works OK. I can't say I'm happy with that situation, because she doesn't eat properly if she does it herself (e.g. peas and gravy in a soup dish as her main meal of the day ...........), but she's wasted so much food in the past we don't know what else to do.
Er, any suggestions would be welcome!
Good luck, hon. Sorry I can't be more constructive!

I well remember those days Dawnie......I had the female equivalent of Harry Enfield's KEVIN.....it went something like this....

Mum.....hello Tracy, good day at school?
T.....grunt..
Mum....what did you do today, what did you have for dinner?
T.......grunt, mumble....

T......opens fridge......what's for dinner...
Mum.....well .... I'm doing pie, potatoes and veg tonight....
T......that's not fair, that's out of order, you know I don't like veg......what's the pie?
Mum......steak and kidney/chicken and mushroom/shepherds.....any variation.....
T....noooo.....don't like that....

Dinnertime she pushes her food around her plate, looks at me as if I have just murdered the family cat and generally grunts at everyone....

I decide I'm fed up with throwing away good food (btw I am a good cook)......so I change tactics....

Scenario......as previous weeks.....but....
T......checking cupboards fridge etc......wots for dinner.....
Mum.....tells her what we are having....
T.....dont like this, dont like that.....

Mum......well thats OK then Tracy because I won't be making you any....
T.....howls of indignation, and 'well out of orders' and 'not fairs'
Mum......I got fed up with emptying your dinner into the bin, so now I am saving myself the trouble of cooking it for you to waste.....etc. etc......she soon came back to eating dinner....

btw.....she is lovely now.....and she loves my cooking.....

Dawnie, I never had that trouble with my kids.
Honestly, I cooked, I set the meal in front of them,...... they ate.

Hi Dawnie,

Its so weird you put this up. Me and OH got back from our anniversary meal, grumpy lass of 14 and a half says ' you need to go shopping, there is never anything decent to eat in this house'

Grrrrrrrrrrrr no rubbish she means

Btw how is Tiddler?

Yes Marion, its amazing how their taste buds change, they seem to remember as adults their tasty dinners as teenagers...

My lot are so appreciative when we invite them round for dinner......my boys always loved their food, but my Tracy was such a mardy little moo as a teenager.......she is great now....

We never got asked, what we wanted for tea when we were young... just ate what was put in front of us.....there was always plenty to eat. and stuff in cupboards if we wanted to cook ourselves..

I used to ask my lot ''what do you want to eat''' and it was always... ''what ya got?'' or dont want/like that
so then I just put it front of them. like my mom did.... and you know what.....they ate it... and always said .thanks mom. that was lovely etc....

asking them what they wanted was a big mistake.
unless its something you know they really dont like of course....
