If the mother puts her baby up for adoption through choice, its usually her who registers the birth. Otherwise, Im not sure, but NORCAP can help, if you google them for the site address.

Barbara

From my experience with this the mother has to register the baby and has to sign her baby over to whoever is taking on the baby. Once the adoptive parents have officially adopted the baby a second birth certificate is provided.

This was the case in 1961.

Barbara, meant to add, I was adopted age 6 in 1982 so had an adoption cert too. This isnt available from Gro.gov like the normal birth certs are. Social services in the area concerned would have a file you can ask to see, I had to wait a year for them to get back to me (!) but it was worth it.

Hi Barbara,,

The birth still has to be or should be as law requires,,,,,,,, registered, under the birth surname...........,and no given rule who can register a birth as long as the details are true facts as known by the informant,,,,,,but must declare the name of the birth parent,/s,,,,

My sister and I were both adopted and our respective birth mothers registered our births. I was very ill at birth and my mother registered me at two days old, but the odd thing with my sister is, she came to us at only four days old but her mother didn't register her birth until five weeks later.

I always thought that, to register a baby, you had to take it with you to prove that it was really born and you weren't just making it up but perhaps that is not so. I know my sister wasn't with her mother when her birth was registered - she was already with us.

When I had my 3 children (not adopted!) I was given a sheet of paper from the hospital, to take to the registrar. Like you say Kate, otherwise anyone could sell a baby to someone and that person pretend it was theirs. I know mums cant put the babys fathers name on the cert unless theyre married, otherwise the father actually has to be present -else the mother could name anyone!

Kate,,

No thats not the case so this is where you maybe confused,,,,,,,,,,,,a birth has be to by law registered within 42days period which works at 6 weeks,

A Birth parent doesnt have to register a birth.........it can be done anyone as long as the information they give is truthful,,,,

also a child doesnt have to be registered under any christian name,,just the rightful birth surname,,--------but provisions are made that a christian name can be added to the birth entry at the presiding register office at a later date,,,,,,,,,,,

Joan,

The way a birth was registed,,by giving the register offce signed birth details from either a midwife/doctor was the introcuction of the legal form of --Adoption-1927,,,,,,,,,,,

although is documented from 1900 that they had was would be termed,,MIDWIFE reports,on the babies that she had delivered,,,,,,then it was checked that the birth had been registered by a knock on the door, of the parents !!!!and if not a hefty fine was issued to the parent ,,,,,,,,,,,there was a time when registering a birth no certificate was issued,,,,,,and if you wanted one,,,it cost old sixpence then a shilling,,,,,,,,,,and it was just a little square bit of paper with your nam and date on.....no parents, place of birth.

I have my grans its so fragile,,,,,,,,,
