I personally am so sick and bewildered at our society and government today. Everytime you read a paper, watch t/v, someone somewhere is suffering. whether it be a suicide, a murder an abduction or what ever, nothing is good news.
As you might guess I am pretty depressed about the whole thing, how about some sensible ideas to make things better

Bad news sells newspapers and gets TV viewers, there is lots of good in the world.
We live in a beautiful world that we are doing our best to destroy, yet it provides us with water, food, heat and light.
We live in a world that is full of people doing their best to save lives, to help those less fortunate, and in serving their countries.
We, the good, far outnumber the bad

Bring back hanging for anything above burglary with violence, rape kidnap ,abduction of a minor,a killing or robbery with violence should entail the death sentence,
This will clear the jails and save millions a year to house lesser criminals who at the moment are let off because there is no room for them.
These lesser criminals should be subjected to road gangs ,no work ,no food or pocket money.
A few years of this new regime would sort the criminal fraternity out good style.leaving the country a lot better off.
Human rights ?,these people have forfited their rights as they ignored other peoples rights when they commited their act.

Whilst not minimising the subject, it is worth keeping things in perspective by reading some of the old newspapers that are online.

Nothing has changed for hundreds of years - just more people have access to more media. and of course there are more people to commit these acts.

Colin I so agree that there is much good in the world but sometimes it doesn't seem that way
Ian , yes I realise that all this is nothing new and that we hear about it more due to the media but it is still depressing
Fred, as much as I don't like to say it I agree with you, not because it's you but because something major has to be done.
We don't hear about all these things in certain other countries so what are they doing that is right?
I do feel that our country is going the wrong way

Foe every negative story, there are thousands of positive ones that only those closely connected know about.

It is easy to feel the world is an awful place, but the reality is the opposite.

For example, a car accident is an awful thing to happen, but think how many kind and caring people are there to help those involved.

Good will always outweigh the bad..............it just doesn't seem to be reflected in the newspapers.

Janet, I have travelled and lived all over the world and believe me this country of ours is a little gem. Every nation has its share of bad folk and bad news - we have the benefit of living in a country with a media free to report and distort as it seems fit...Many years ago I was caught up in the bombing by the IRA of a pub, I was unhurt but amazed to read in the newspaper that people had been fighting to get into taxi's and on buses to get get out of thearea, not one word about the taxi's making themselves available to the emergency services to ferry the injured to hospital and the panicing away from the area that I had witnessed myself

I appreciate that the media sensationalizes everything but it is real all the suicides in Bridgend, the abduction of that little girl, the murder of young Sophie and all the other murders, it doesn't matter how much you fluff up an incident it still has happened and so many suffer the after effects. Ok so I am not getting things in proportion, it's just I am having a bad day and needed to vent my feelings

I absolutely see where you are coming from, but I also know there is such an overwhelming majority of kind and caring acts that never get reported nationally.

It is sometimes really hard to get things into proportion though.

I hope you feel more positive soon. ((hug))

Janet, You are not alone the guy on local radio has just been chatting about how all the bad news is depressing him, its just that as Kitty mentioned for every bad thing that happens there are thousands of good things that go on unmentioned.

You read about the young terraways
You dont read about the young people in the sea, army and air force cadets
You read about people sponging off the state
You don't read about people travelling miles or moving home so that they dont have to claim benefits
You read about murder
You dont read about the hundreds of thousands who donate blood and blood products to save lives..

Hope your day gets brighter Col x

Some of the young thugs love the notoriety that the newspaper brings them, so maybe the newspapers ought to try and have a few months of just printing all the good and caring things people have done and curtailing all the free publicity the criminals get.
I also think prison has become a badge of honour for some of them and something to aspire to, perhaps prison should go back to being somewhere that is very unpleasant.
Just my opinion anyway
