no it wasnt dizzy, it was an orchard and fields.....there was a manor house, and old dagenham village was very small, the road i live on was asmall dirt road and there was a small police station and a fire station, and the fire station had and still is the only one in the country that can rescue trapped horses, they still train the fire men today.....

My town has been here since Saxon times, the exact location that our house is built on is the site of the cattle market which existed until relatively recently

Hi Gwen,

I live in a small market town.It was granted its charter almost a thousand years ago. The town I was born in was granted its charter in 1280. The towns are only 3 miles apart.

But the town I work in was a small fishing village until the industrial revolution. Then it went on to become one of the best ship building towns in the world

Hi D.D. the village I live in has a web site www.Broadbottom Village.com/ and also has a history project from 1795 on there together with pictures. the cottage we live in dates back to c 1749 if it is of interest to you. I think what you are doing is a v good idea everything everywhere is changing so quickly I feel lost in local towns no familiar landmarks, just tall blocks of yupppy apartments at megga prices.

Have a look at the Ancestral Villages site. You can add the names of people who lived there and make contact with others - its a great way of keeping the village alive.

Hi Gwen
My little "village" was here 100 years ago,
and didnt look very different to how it is now-
a lot more trees, a few less houses,
dirt tracks instead of roads.
The little school next door was built
in 1880, but has been burned down
twice in bushfires, so doesnt look the same.
