I'm always terrified of doing that, Roxanne.
I always take the back door keys out of the lock and put them on the worktop, as we have a cat flap, and go out the front door.
The one good thing about the cat flap is, I know where the keys are on the worktop, and a mop that stands outside the door can be used to knock them off - however, daughter and her b/f don't have the knack!!
I also have a front door key hidden in the garden. It's a bit rusty, but from time to time I retreive it, spray it with WD40 and make sure it still works.

My youngest, who was very small was utilised by various neighbours who had locked themselves out - they used to shove her through the little kitchen window!!

Hi Roxanne, our door does that as well, but ONLY if the inside key has been turned, if it is straight in line the outer key will push the inner one through and open the door.......

Hi Bob,Cant do that with ours:-((
yes,I had left the key in on the inside:-))

when I saw how he opened it I felt even dafterlol

a piece of very thin plastic and two paint scrapers to wedge it open slightly, one at the top one at the bottom!

So at least I know im not cut out for house breakinglol

Good career though,Lock Smith1 min job for 140 euros, not bad .is it?

Roxanne, sorry you had such an expensive problem.

Two things struck me here:
Maggie, first of all, if you can get the key with something, so can a burglar!! I once locked myself out, long story, won't bore you with the details altho funny, but I managed with the help of a wire coathanger from a neighbour, to get my keys from inside the house on a hall table and let myself in. That was through the letter box so through a cat flap is even easier, and often a way used by thieves. It taught me a lesson and I don't leave the keys there any more.

The second thing is, put a spare key in a tissue soaked with wd40 or vaseline and store it in a small coffee jar or similar, and bury it in the garden. Do it when no one is around and remember where you buried it. Obviously has to be the front garden if you can't get into the back without a key lol but much easier to find and the key is clean and works well.

Nothing works tho if you have left the key in the lock so is a case of retraining yourself to make sure it is out before you pull the door shut.

Huia Report 27 Apr 2008 05:52

I havent done that but did lock myself out of the vehicle once with the key in the ignition. Now I stand there looking at the key in my hand saying 'yes I have the key' and looking again and saying it again, several times before I shut the door. Dont want to have it happen again.
BTW, how much is a Euro in old LDS?

Hi Liz,
It does sound dodgy leaving the keys on the side, but they're not visible - hence daughter and b/f were unable to get them!
If anyone really wanted to break in, the quickest way would be to break a kitchen window. If they managed to do that, they'd probably sue me because they are likely to fall over the junk!!!
LOL

Oh that's good then Maggie, you see so many reports of people being burgled cos they left keys in the lock so the burglar could reach up through the cat flap and get them or reach them from elsewhere.

I know what you mean about the junk, at my house which I don't inhabit at the mo, the hall is so full of stuff, you know me and my hoarding, that if anyone was to shoulder the door in, it would spring back on them and knock them out, well that's the hope anyway, and if they did look in and see the mess, they would think someone had been in before them lol

Huia, I have twice locked myself out of my old car, years ago, both times when I had my son with me. The AA got me in the first time, with the help of a metal coathanger again lol and the second time the police came and did it with a spare key they had in their box of lost property keys!!!
Before the days of central locking tho, now I am very careful I don't lock the keys in the boot or something silly and always check I have the key in my hand before I close the boot, altho I have to physically lock the car doors so can't make a mistake!
Take care everyone, it's an expensive business getting locks opened and replaced.
