Does anyone know why people bother to contact you via a "hot match" then when you get back to them with the connection, they disappear off the face of the earth. Its happened to me on two separate occasions on here now, where they made the first contact, a link was found and now, after three or four attempts on my part, they wont come back to me. What's the point of having your tree on here if you dont want the contact's ?????? I'm flumaxed and so dissapointed !!!

Hi Janet and Trudy, What a shame that we are not related !! at least we would know we could rely on replies eh ? !

oh well, will just keep trying

Happy searching

Do bear in ming that some people may only log on to here infrequently. I sometimes get responses after a gap over six months, and in one case, over a year.

If you haven't had a reply after a month, a follow up message sometimes works.

Thanks Peter,

will keep trying, but I have cut and paste my message several times to these people, who are quite obviously related to me. Shame they dont seem to want the contact. Surely you log on here to see if you can find any links. Oh well never mind eh ! Its their loss.

I found one Hot Match, who has my mother in his list ! Yet he persistently refuses to even answer my enquiries. I've also found a cousin, who also doesn't reply. Names, dates, places etc all confirm that they are the right people. There is little, if any, point in putting a tree on GR if there is no intention of answering - unless it's that they want YOUR research, but are unwilling to share theirs !

Sometimes. though, real life takes over and people can't look in for a while.....................or are ill or away, try to be patient and maybe one day soon they will get in touch again.

Just had a thought.................if someone has let their membership lapse but left their tree on here.................would GR contact them to let them know there is someone trying to contact them?

A lapsed member will still get an email saying that they have a new message on GR & they can still reply BUT they could have changed their email address & not told GR

I've sent mails to these persons via GR, and the 'opened envelope' icon shows that at least SOMEONE has read them ! If someone leaves GR, whether by letting membership lapse or for other reasons, then I'd have thought that their tree would be deleted. I'm not sure about the latter, though - perhaps someone knows for certain ?????

Thanks Claire.......................I think trees stay until the owner removes them, unless GR ban them and delete everything.

If I'm wrong, sorry:)

Tudor, unfortunately the little envelope in your "Sent Box" show as open as soon as the message is sent so you can n't see if a person has read the message or not.

Kitty I'm sure you are correct which would mean that we would have a number of trees on here for deceased members

Also the people who start when they watch WDYTYA, then realise it isn't nearly as easy as it seems and give up!

I know at least 2 people who gave up after an initial burst of enthusiasm:))

I thought I had that right Claire.............thanks again:)

Thank you, Claire !!! I thought that if it showed as 'open' it meant that the message had been read. Maybe I've been a little hasty in that case. Addresses can be found (sometimes) via the electoral roll, but if we had those the problem of contacting via GR wouldn't arise. Thank you, again, for explaining things.

As far as WDYTYA is concerened, it does give a false impression. At my local branch of the Mormon Church Family History Centre we get numerous enquiries from people who think it can all be done in days - and even from people who think that we trace their trees for them, and get quite angry when told that the Centre only provides the facilities. But it wouldn't be the challenge that it is if that were the case, or as much fun would it !
