.

I was at the airport last weekend waiting for a flight when I heard the unmistakeable sound of a man with a pair of Blakeys in his shoes....I hadn't heard that sound for years and it took me back to when I was a little girl and remembering my dad and him wearing his best shoes when we went out for the day...I loved the sound they made!

I haven't seen them in the shops for years, they were quite popular when I was small but hearing the sound of the blakeys last week made me remember my dad and wonder.... Do people still wear blakeys in their shoes??

Yes. I do, lol. Well, steel tips in heel and toes on my tackety boots. I've had one pair of brogue boots that I bought around 20 years agao, handmade. They are still as good as new.

How sad is that!

Oh Rosie....you've started off all sorts of memories.

During the war I was evacuated oop Norf and I can remember so clearly being woken up every morning by the men going to work in the mills and the sound of their clogs on the cobble stones.

Today everyone seems to wear trainers (:

I used to wear them too :o)

You can still get them in cobblers shops, I bought some for my daughter a month or two ago - not sure about Woolworths (where I used to get mine) though

My Dad was the blakey king, always had them in my shoes, not now tho, but I am still hard on one side of my heels. Dad was quite good at fixing our shoes, had to be as we didn't have a lot of money, and I now have the last he used, for a doorstop.

Segs, Blakeys. My Dad always used to put them on his shoes.
We had a very old shoemakers last, and it was not until I started family history, I found that this belonged to my 2 x great grandfather, who was a boot and shoemaker.
Wish shoes could be mended these days, I have had to throw shoes with good uppers away, because the soles have worn out and could not be mended.

Blakeys are the name of the Company
Segs are the product

My sister in law worked at Blakeys
in Fitzwillaim Yorkshire making the shoe segs. I think their main place was in Arrmley, Leeds

I had them on my school shoes. WE used to tap dance on the pavement in them
Dad also had a last and mended our shoes for us.
