Help I am tracking back through a branch of the family I have limited knowledge of. My question is. If I find a marriage entry for one person, is there a way finding out the spouse rather than matching the entry or ordering certificates, an expensive way of elimination. I am sorry if this seems a silly question but I am fairly new to family history.

thanks

David

It depends on if you want a tree that is 100% correct

I have a rellie that was know as William, but his B/C states his name was Samuel

My brother spent a fair amount working out which Lees were ours

Thanks, I do want an accurate tree otherwise whats the point or wheres the fun. The specific problem I have is that I have a relative Harriet Franklin married Benjamin Aubrey. I can find several entries for Harriets but none for Benjamin.

What time period are you after? Between 1837 and 1901, if you can find a person with two possible spouses on the marriage index you can usually find them with the correct spouse on the next census (assuming they haven't died or remarried).

After 1911 the correct partner's name is listed on the marriage index, but at the moment 1901-1911 is an awkward decade because the 1911 census isn't out yet and the partners aren't listed as a cross-reference.

I can find them on the census but I could do with the wedding cert as better proof.

Aah i see now, maybe their marriage wasn't registered as it wasn't compulsory till 1875

Was he born in 1831 or 1842 2 census saying 2 different things

Have you got any other indicators that Harriet was a Franklin before marriage ie. child's birth certificate?

You've got me thinking now, Julie, because I always thought the marriage certificate had to be filled out immediately after the ceremony. Unless it was and the copy never made it to the GRO? Or, even more frustratingly, they never actually got married and just said they were?

Here it is

Marriages Sep 1865 (>99%)

Aubury Benjamin Brackley 3b 21
Franklin Harriet Brackley 3b 21

Surname spelt with a U and not an E

Well done, Julie. I was looking at Towcester (a guess because of the registration district on the 1861 census).

I find names like Harriet are quite hard to follow up because I have seen them spelt all sorts of ways ie. "Harriet", "Harriett", "Harriot".

Hi Julie
Sorry I had a senior moment, did you use BDM and crossmatched or is there another way. Also impresed with the speed. This info ties in with what I do know.

thanks again

David, the marriage is on FreeBMD here:-
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

If you do as Julie did, jusr enter first name benjamin, and spouse Franklin (good name that, its mine, but my lot are from Wiltshire) along with a year range, it will bring up the reference.
They are actually the only two with that ref.
