Hi Peter
I guess your lucky in as much you can avoid the post office, but there are others that have to rely on the local post office and others that can not get about easyly that also rely heaverly on them too.
The post office do get paid for every transaction they make. They also had been charging too much for some typ's of postage cost, so they changed the way they would charge for postage altogether and it's even dearer now. They make money just like any other busyiness. Seems they are happy to take the public's money but not so happy to give the public what they need. but thats just my view and i know maybe others might see things differently.

I avoid the post office like the plague if I can - visit perhaps twice a year at most.

However, bottom line is that they don't make any money and require continual subsidy from the tax payer. Perhaps an alternative would be to charge each time you visit. 50p a time perhaps?

Seems to me that they are closeing all the big Post office's and opening small ones in the back of different shops. We often see and hear people saying such and such post office has now closed down. My questions are as follows.

1. Are the small shops capeble of dealing with a larger amount of people it will have in the shop?

2. Will there be a health and safety issue with the extra number of people in the small shops at any one time?

3. I see some of the post office's are upstairs.. Can the disabled and the elderly get to the post office upstairs?

4. Are the post office still going to employ ample amount of staff to serve the public without makeing them waight in long ques for long amounts of time?

5. Do the Post office really care about it's public?

6 Are the public willing to fight to keep post offices open?

7. If there was a national Fight to keep Your Post Office campaign how many people would get involved?

thats just a few things for you to think about. thats all.

Like Hazel, the MAIN post office in Winchester is now squashed into the back of W H Smiths. There's not enough room for the queue, and nowhere to fill in any forms.
I live on the outskirts of Winchester and our local PO closed 3 years ago with the premise that there was one 'just up the road' - well it was 'just up the road' if you were prepared to walk half a mile up a dark unlit track or walk 2 miles taking the 'normal' route - the main PO is one and a half miles away
This PO then closed due to retirement!!!

My OH heard rumours that a supermarket chain was going to provide a weighing of letters service. If this is true then I'll be happy. Does anyone else know of this.

Hi Amanda, Good luck with trying to obtain compensation. I have had a bad experience with the Post Office. I returned a computer motherboard, sent by next day delivery, with the parcel to be signed for. I tracked the delivery on the computer and was advised that the parcel had been delivered. However, no refund came from the supplier as they said that they had not received the parcel. The Post Office failed to obtain a signature. It took me until the beginning of May to get compensation from the P.O. Many forms, e-mails, etc before getting a result. Good luck!

The main post office on our High Street moved into the back of the news agents years ago.......the old post office building is now a Funeral Parlor.....says it all really.........lol

Our general post office, a very beautiful building, closed some time ago and is also now situated at the back of a store.

I guess things have changed, re. emails.paying bills direct debit & on - line, but service should still be there for the many people who have no access to
computers and banks.

The Mail is just not the same any more either!
The book my Grandson ordered was 'delivered' (when no one was home) by being thrown over the garden wall where lt lay for a while, becoming damaged in the bad weather.
A note had been posted to say "around the side"?

Nobody takes any responsibility! I've told him to claim compensation as the book is ruined. Not good enough is it?

Janet.........you can try writing to your local MP and have a moan about it but I think all that will happen is you'll recieve a House of Commons letter saying:

" Whilst it is recognised that some post offices have recently closed , the Govenment remain commited to supporting the network by providing £1.7 billion over the next three years to keep remaining post offices open. "

Well thats what I got anyway........it sounds like a lot of dribble to me :(

Our main CITY Post Office was closed this year, and is now in WH Smith, upstairs! Not enough staff and not enough room for the huge queues! Try your local media, get a petition? But it seems to me they can do exactly what they like anyway.

Not happy! Went into town today to our MAIN post office to see to my annoyance it was slowly closing down. I thought it was just small village post offices closing. But no, its town centre ones too! There is a very small PO near but when you want to do other shopping too its more convenient to do all together in the main shopping area. I feel so angry about this.
Anyone know where I can complain about this? This damned government.
That's my moan over.
