Hi

I know this doesn't follow most of the topics on the boards but I have been doing some artwork with acrylics and I have actually done a painting I want to keep long term. If there are any artists out there who paint with acrylics can you advise if I need to varnish/seal/spray the picture to keep long term.

I admit to knowing absolutely nothing about art but have painted this on a pretreated stretched canvas if that info helps.

Try an art store, Esta. I think there is a preservative spray that you can use to protect your painting. Is it a nice painting?

Acrylics are a kind of plastic. They don't need varnishing.

You can do so if you wish but it would make it shiny.

Hello, Sue. I didn't realize that acrylics don't need varnishing. I paint canvases to use with photos - a kind of scrapbooking on canvas. I don't seal it because I don't want to harm the photos and embellishments I use. Maybe the sealant used is for oil paints.

Hi Esta. You could try Krylon gloss UV Resistant Acrylic Coating spray ....You may need 3 to 4 coats

Good luck with your paintings

Cheers Tony.....:>))) ( who paints with Oils and Water )

You don't really need to varnish oil paints either but varnish helps protect unglazed pictures.

These might help

Thank you to everyone for their replies! I only do abstract for acrylics but I would really like to keep this one so your help has been much appreciated!

I usually sketch which isn't so much of a problem as I use a fixing spray but painting is another matter.

I haven't used polyfiller - never thought of that! Have done sand in gold paint which is really effective and mosiac into acryils goods really good as well.

Hi I use Hard as nails or acrylic filler, the sort you put in a gun, dead cheap from £1 shops., to make textures before painting in acrylics, it dries in half a day and doesnt shrink.
you can texture over old canvasses to recycle them.
I will pm you my gallery site.
