Hi everybody, just a flying visit, I'm off out in a minute.

Jean, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles, poor little Scarlett, I hope she doesn't have to go into care. I'm sure everyone will see she's better off with her grandmother who loves her. Her other grandparents are being sensible by suggesting Scarlett's mother visits her at your house every day. I hope it works out for you all.

I'm very late now, catch you all later, have a good day.

Morning all
Back from the nurse about my weight. Well I gained 0.2 kg after being ill at Christmas and considering all the meals out and party on Saturday I am not too disappointed. But she wants to see me in 2 weeks before I go away !!! That is a day after my daughter's birthday, so not good timing again.
Why do we always celebrate with meals so much now? And to refuse to go or watch everything that you eat seems so rude.

Good luck with the tooth Marilyn Hubby is off to his dentistin an hour too. He is still getting pain and sensitivity, hope he gets it sorted. Away soon ourselves.

Baby Scarlett needs you Jean, does your son live with you? Otherwise it will be a big responsibility. You won't be able to go to the horses so often. But what a great thing for you to be able to do. Is Scarletts Mum very young? Sounds like she could do with some parenting classes as well as the help from you and her own parents. Hope you can work out the best for all of you.

Linda :o) XxX

well I am back from my blood tests. I have to wait till Thurday for my warfarin test to come back to see if it is OK. ? then Friday I get the one for my Polymalta Rheumatica blood test results. and as I was leaving the surgery Liz the receptionist called to me and then told me Dr Kelly needs to see me for my medication medical. that is 18th Feb . the 15th I have the Scan at the Hospital. then ten days after that I have to go to the hospital for the results.then of course in Guildford.
I will have another appointment for a warfarin blood test depending on the results.
I called into the dentist and asked to go on their NHS list they have given me a form I counted 30 questions about my health on it. I have to fill that in and take it back this week. .
I dont think they will take me on when they see the list of things I have wrong with me. ?
so I am not a happy bunny today.

Hello again, thought I would bring you up to date with news.
We have all agreed that baby should not go into care, Mum had agreed that her parents suggestion that baby stay here is for the best, and she will visit every day, Mum is 27, a year younger than my son, they have a house all decorated and furnished ready for them to move into, but for some reason Mum wants to stay with her parents, but they cannot cope with Mum and 2 children as they only have a 2 bedroomed house so they are over crowded and it gets very noisy at times. My son lives here with me, he works split shifts at night so needs to have some sleep during the day, but at least he sees quite a lot of baby. he spoke to Social services again and told them we dont want baby in care, the duty officer still advised him to apply for custody to prevent Mum from taking her away from here as and when she feels like it. but they did agree that she should stay within the family. and someone will still visit tomorrow.

Rita, I do hope all your blood tests results will be ok.

Mo, how is your nephew? hope he is making progress.

We have had some sun today, makes a nice change, but forecast is for rain again tomorrow.

Hope you have all had a nice day.

Jean that is good news I am sure things will work out in the end. perhaps the girl is nervouse and relys on her Mum and the thought of being on her own ( I mean just with your son and children is a bit scary for her. but you are right to get it sorted so she cannot just come and say I want my daughter back and take her. she is a bit unstable at the moment not knowing what she wants.?
Take care.
Love Rita.

Afternoon.

Hope everyone is well and warm.

Pleased that Jeans dilemma seems to be sorting itself out.

Trust Ritas' son and Mo's nephew are mending well.

My father in law was in the Navy, began as a boy rating.

He was on Ajax, Shropshire, and a couple of other County Class.

I think he was in the ship opposite the Graf Spey, whose name escapes me. He was blown off ship, and eventually pensioned out of the Navy, he was only in his 20's. He was ill from then on, and died well before his time.

Back later with luck.

Maddie,

A wee memory jogger..........The three RN Ships involved in the Battle of the River Plate with the Graf Spey were.........
HMS Achilles, Exeter and Ajax. I suspect your FIL was on Exeter as she was very badly damaged in the action. Ajax and Achilles were only slightly damaged. Problem with a Sea Battle is you have nowhere to hide.
My FIL died fairly young also, age 62, and was probably due to his 5 years as a POW.

Lots of odds and ends done today. At the Post Office first time for ages, it has been refurbished, looks great. Picked up on gossip from our friends.

Generally had a good day.

Catch you all later.

A wee chuckle for the evening.

Why are dogs mans best friend ?

1. They never give advice.

2. They never borrow money.

3. They don't have In-Laws.

Adam & Eve had the perfect marriage.

She didn't have to listen how his mother was such a good cook.
He didn't have to listen how she could have married a better man.

Sadly, both were accused of scrumping apples. He blamed her & she blamed the snake.

Have things really changed that much since?

Just been told Stephen, it was Exeter.

MIL had photos of the ship when it had been hit. It was listing quite a lot, practically in the water.

She also had photos of when they returned and had a march through Portsmouth. Being led by a Chaplain.

Really wonderful photos.

The Wedding Debacle

Dan Cronin was a Carman on the road to Cork. ‘Carman’ was a posh Cork expression for a man with a horse & cart transporting goods - the forerunner of today’s 28 wheel - 30 foot low-loader with a bed & satnav. The only comfort Dan would allow himself on his travels was a woollen blanket across his knees on a frosty day & a bag of corn to feed the horse.

Dan would normally be carrying butter but when the butter was scarce, he’d be carrying corn. He had to make a living somehow.

One evening, he filled his load ready for an early start. He hit the hammock early that night & was up in the morning before six. He hung the kettle down in the open turf fire still smouldering from the night before and while he was waiting for it to boil, he tackled the mare & cart. He drank a quick cup of tea - that’s all he had time for. He didn’t rouse the wife - they weren’t long married.

The mare had no mind for the road lately - she had a foal that year & like the human, she was lazy parting with her offspring. So, it took Dan’s patience to coax her into her normal stride. Dan had only gone a mile or so when he met the postman on his bike. He had a letter for Dan. Dan didn’t bother to look at the letter until he had his business completed & was ready to return home.

When Dan eventually read the letter, he had a bit of a shock because it came from an Attorney in New York stating that a wealthy lady, a family connection of his mother, had died & it would be in Dan’s interest to come over to New York quickly, as there were others watching the expected estate proceeds.

Now, Dan was a man who wouldn’t let his right hand know what his left hand is up to. So, he tied the mare to the back shaft of another cart that would be passing his own house and asked the driver to tell his new wife that he’d be delayed. He then turned on his heel & headed down to Queenstown & boarded the boat to America. You’d be ages on the waves to get there at that time.

When, after a few days, Dan did not return home, Norah - his wife got panicky. Other cart drivers were asked to enquire about him in Cork. They did but there was no news of Dan.

At that time, anyone returning from the city on foot could take a nice short-cut across the river at Einshees. There were stepping stones there long before the bridge was built but they were treacherous stones as a few people knew to their cost.

There was a flood & a good while afterwards, a body was found in the river a few miles below the stone crossing. Seemingly, there was a likeness to Dan, as far as a likeness could be made out. The Police Sergeant said everything tallied & there was nobody else missing.

Dan was buried in the family grave & his widow Norah killed herself crying. Ah, that was the tearful face that had many admirers - she was young, only a few months married & had a farm of 10 acres with the run of 12 cows.

Norah had good neighbours & they came together to save the harvest for her & they also helped with the spring work. She came well out of it too & so did the mare - no carting to Cork - only a little bit of work around the farm. And the mare didn’t mind that because she was near her foal now maturing into a fine lump of a young colt, jet black with four white socks, going mad with glee, clearing five-bar gates or any other obstacle - until the Parish Priest put his eye on him.

(Part 2 to follow …..)
