Stephen I was just looking in my files to see if I could find anything I had noted on Uncle Charlies file but I have not. Uncle Charlie was born in 1900 he went into the navy as a boy.

I looked at my Great Uncle Walter Lee( my Grandfathers brother he went into the navy as a young boy in 1889. and ended up a Ist class Petty Officer in 1911 I have all his papers and the list of ships he served on amoung them is HMS Victory 1 he was on that 7 times. The tall ships.he also served on The Duke of Wellington. HMS Excellent , The High Flyer spent a year in the dock yard in Gilbralter. he served on Seahorse and The arrogant and would you beleive the first HMS Hood from 1st t June 1893 till september 7th 1896 when he was on the seahorse I have the book which states the Seahorse was a Brig (no idea what that means ) his Captain was Clement cooper Horne and it was station Portland Harbour. so Great uncle Walter served on the first Hood and Uncle Charlie served on the other one.

isnt that interesting

My son said he is not sure about the medals of Uncle Charlie but one is The Alantic Star and another is the Pacific Star, he was a 1st class stoker My son got intouch with the Navy and queried the medals as he was not sure what they were for as I had mixed them all up Great Grandfather a regular Army and both Uncle Charlie and his Brother George Navy

Rita Report 9 May 2011 21:02

Linda he must have been on there when my Uncle Charlie was on then if he was on the ship when it turned around, as Uncle Charlie was given leave and was on shore when the Hood left dock to head out to sea his stuff was still on board except for the sack he use to have with his name on he was on his way back when he was told to report for the other ship.

Stephen Uncle Charlie was not on the ship in 1924 when that other Butler was on board to my knowledge there was no Alfred in the family there was a Thomas and the families where large except Uncle Charlie he lost a brother on one of the ships. dont know what one it was.I know the medals I gave to my grandson had a bronze one a big one given to the parent after someone died so I was told it had the name George Butler engraved around the edge.
I have emailed my son and asked if he can find out anything more. so I have to wait and see what he says

Evening everyone
Mo Thanks for the lovely photo of your new Great Grand daughter, Gracie-Mai, is a lovely name too.
Sally, Cath and Pat if you send me a PM I will send you some of the things I have been forwarding, never too much just a few things that either tickle me or are nice to share.

I had a nice surprise when I checked my e-mails earlier as I have won second prize in a survey competition from Boots, not a lot but enough to treat myself.

HMS Hood, my husband's Great Uncle died onboard. He was Leonard Frederick George Sheppard. He should have got off when they were last ashore, but was unfortunately very ill in the sick bay and the turn around was too quick to get him off so he had to stay and was unfortunately killed. He was married to Hubby's grandmothers sister and died before he was born, but I have been in contact with his grand daughter, in connection wit the family history.

Hubby's car has to be towed away tomorrow as the radiator hose fitting has split, needs to go to the garage, so I have the joy of arranging a breakdown pick up tomorrow.

See you later

Linda :-) <3
