Ok I was on free AVG 7.5, which as we all know is out of date, and updates stopped on 16th April, so I downloaded Free AVG 8.5.

Now the first time I downloaded it, I couldn't get it to scan manually, got an error message. It also did the scheduled scan, well it told me scanning was complete, but on the main screen, it kept telling me that no scan had been done to date,, yet I had all the tracking cookies in my virus vault.

Anyway, I uninstalled it, re-loaded it, and started again. Now I can't get it to turn on. I click -turn on- in the security section, get the usual 'do you trust this program' message click yes, then the 'windows wants' message, which I click yes....and nothing. It's still off.

I have turned windows defender off to see if that is the problem, but no, it makes no difference...

Clearly a case of conflict perhaps, or do I need to uninstall again?

Anyone?

Dunno about a hammer, but have you ever seen a flying laptop? lol

Forgot to say, if there are any buffs out there, I'm on Vista Home, service pack 1 (which may have something to do with it, I remember having trouble with AVG on XP after downloading SP2)

The annoying thing is, I've downloaded it to my OH's PC and it was fine, no problems at all.

Ok his video card has just conked out this week, so he's moaning that he doesn't have his PC now...put him on the old XP low memory one, so he's moaning about the slowness, but hey, I can't do everything LOL

Grrrrrr.

Hi Teresa, probably a stupid question. Did you uninstalled the AVG7.5 before trying to start up the AVG8.5?

Steve.

Stevie, I didn't uninstall before, but the installation of 8.5 did it for me.

It has definitely gone, it was gone when I uninstalled 8.5 the first time.

AVG is running a scan right now, but it doesn't show on the status, and still shows as 'off' in the security window.

I've always used AVG.... but I updated to 8.5 and ever since then when it is running a scan, which takes about 3 hours (:
the computer is so slow I lose the will to live.

Stevie gave me some very good tips and I have done everything he suggested but it hasn't helped at all.

Jean.

Jean that happens to me too. I set mine to scan at midday, but it was still running at 1.30 and it was soooo slow.

I'm not happy...especially as when I log on, it tells me it's not switched on...so that means it doesn't do the start-up scan.

I'm beginning to think its a scam to make us take the paid version. All I want is for something to detect and destroy viruses, trojans and worms, that's all.
