A rip Off!!
I am so Angry with these people. I looked to see how long my membership ran til.....November......I didn't want automatic renewal so followed their directions......the only option I found was to cancel......The page it took me too said that there would be no refund ( fine ) but it then said I could still view all records until AUGUST.......OK I thought and pressed the cancel Button......They cancelled and now tell me my subscription finishes at the end of May.. I Am so annoyed...and the one time they actually had a UK free phone number easily accessible was on a page I have now lost by coming out of it
Firstly it takes forever to find out how to cancel. Then when I finally did I loose the lot.
Beware others who don't want automatic renewal. This may also happen to you.
Another thing....don't forget to check your bank statements when cancelling.....It took me 3 months the last time to find that although I no longer had the use of the service, Ancestry were still taking payment. They ignored all emails, and only by blocking them via the bank did they stop. My bank luckily got the money back after I had to supply them with copies of the emails requesting Ancestry to stop taking payments

My credit card changed owners, so I was issued a new one with new details (number, issue date etc.) It's a pre-paid Mastercard which I use only for online shopping, and only put the cash on that I need to spend.
I tried to go into my account to change the details as my sub was due soon. I kept getting taken to a page saying 'you email address is not stored on our database'
Yes it is, they kept sending me the newsletters, and reminders that my sub was due soon.
So I tried to contact them for help, but the same thing, email not on database. Phoned them (when I eventually found the number) they said they would look into it and get back to me. That was last June. Not a word since.
So I am no longer a member of Ancestry, as I cannot renew. Grrrr

I had a similar problem with AOL...............after trying for 3 months to get my MAC code I succeeded, and transferred to Tiscali.
AOL took payments for 3 more months, my bank got the money back last September.
I had a letter from a debt collection agency last week demanding the money I owed AOL...........by now it was the money refunded plus interest.
I rang AOL ( foreign man not helpful!!!) to be told the debt was cancelled and the account was now closed!!
Yesterday I got another letter from the debt collectors..............I spoke to AOL again and a very kind Irish lady has assured me she will be informing the collection agency that I owe no money to AOL, she gave me a reference number and the debt collection agency phoned AOL and then me to confirm they are happy that it is an AOL error.
I was very very upset as I have never not paid my bills, let alone been threatened with the balliffs!!
GRRRRRRRRR

I got that page saying my email address wasn't stored too TW....4 times.....I nearly gave up but finally they brought up the cancellation page.
I now wish I had waited until nearer November to cancel.
It's a wonder this type of rip off hasn't been on Watch Dog, as over the years I have read of many cases of their dubious professional dealings.

That happened to my daughter with Aol Kitty. She was distraught until it was sorted.
BT aren't to keen on passing on the codes to other providers either as I found out.
The trouble is, even though some things can get sorted in the end by numerous phone call/emails/letters....Why should we have to.?..it can be so time consuming and distressful
Edit...Oh dear...no wonder I couldn't find my thread. I thought I had posted it on General.

Thank you Kay& Claire.....you beat me to it :-)
I found the free phone number eventually and phoned it.
What a wonderful woman she was too :-)...American.
She reinstated my subscription which was partly free ( from purchasing FTM )......August was when the free one finished and November was when I was usually due to pay again.
Anyway.....so that this doesn't happen again, I asked her to ensure that my subscription was non automatic by which I would be sent a renewal email when the time comes.
My passing comment to her was that I wish she would help with the wording and easier access to important info on their website as all was sorted without either of us misunderstanding the other....a very pleasant change.
I hope my posting and also Kay's/Claire's help with the number will help others in a similar situation
All credit to the the lovely American woman on the other end too :-))
PS...thank you all for adding and also listening to my moans

I've spoken to that wonderful American too...unless they employ an army of them lol.
My subscription was due for renewal and I every time I tried to renew and, at the same time, upgrade on line it refused to accept my credit card.
I rang the free phone number, spoke to this wonderful American lady who renewed and upgraded by membership and gave me an extra month free for my trouble.
Now that's what I call customer service.
Jean.

Makes you wish you knew her in every day life Jean :-)
She had that kind of voice and personality that I wish I had a few more Ancestry problems so's we could have another chat.....which, at the time, we did, for a few minutes :-)
