Well done Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Sir Ranulph Fiennes reached the summit of Everest today.

This was his third attempt at the climb. His first attempt, four years ago, had to be abandoned after he suffered a heart attack just 1000 feet from the summit. After recovering from heart-bypass surgery his second attempt came in 2008, but had to be abandoned due to his suffering from exhaustion.
So, succeeding in his third attempt is an achievement indeed.

65 year old Sir Ranulph has raised millions of pounds over the years for various charities.
Having lost his wife, his mother and his sister to cancer, his target on this particular climb up Everest, was £3m for the Marie Curie Fund.

Well done, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. What sheer determination and guts this bloke has!

An absolutely amazing man!! Congratulations Sir Ranulph! he really is an inspiration to many.

Think adventurers of his calibre should be idolised and not the 'celebrities' who have gained fame through being on celebrity shows et al.

I agree with you Mau, that it's sad when somebody can rise to the dizzy heights of celebrity status, becoming a household name, just because they appeared on telly spouting vulgarities for 5 minutes!! And yet there's guys like Sir Ranulph who have reached Everest's summit, crossed the arctic, antarctic, and deserts of the world facing death on several occasions but raising £millions for charities - and they go through life hardly noticed by many.
Is the media to blame, do you think?

I guess the amount of responses to this thread says a lot about current trends in newsworthy items.

I was about to make the same coment Karen! sad isn't it?

No i don't think it's fault of the media, there will always be shallow folk who think good things should happen to them without much effort required.
We can't all become adventurers,or explorers but I just think it's sad that lots (not all ) of young folk think being famous is some kind of goal!!

well done sir ranulph you are an inspiration to us all. Having had a large stroke 7 weeks ago just getting out of hospital was my immediate goal. They said I'd be in for 12 weeks but I was determined to get on my feet but I can now get up stairs with care. It feels like everest at the moment but what an inspiration to know that sir ranulph has overcome his heart problems to achieve so much. A great man and this news makes such a change to all the talk of corrupt MPs.

Some months ago I went to a recording of Countdown and Sir Ranulph was the celebrity guest, He is such a nice unassuming man and so matter of fact about his achievements
He also is very witty with a dry sense of humour

I am so glad he made it. A fantastic feat of determination on his behalf.

Well done to him and for the money that he raised.
