We put the back up files on a DVD but microsoft backs up to the D drive. Our PC man is on holiday until next week so it has to wait until then.

I think SHRat has hit the nail on the head.
My daughter had the same problem as she accidentally put the backup files on the D drive instead of a CD ROM.
Our local computer guy sorted it in a few minutes when he came to do some work on the main system.

I am going to bed now, will look at this tomorrow, thanks for your help so far, will probably have to put it in to get professionally sorted.

It is an Acer desk top but the other statements are correct

Thanks, yes we wont reformat then but still can't see why it thinks the disc is full as there just is not enough stuff on it, it is only ever used to back up.

It looks like your hard drive is partitoned, one part has the operating system and your programs on it the other half of the partition has your back on it, the back up ar the files that will put the system back to day one, if you run this or reformat you will lose all data and any programs that you have installed.

It only found a notepad of 0 bytes!!! Lol not a lot of help that.
should I also look at hidden protected operating system files and extensions to known file types, both these are ticked to be hidden

How will we know if there is a possible error in the file allocation table? The only thing on there as far as we can see is the last back up file and something called media.ID.bin which is a very small file. will it show hidden and system files when you 'explore'?

Ron that is where I got the figures from.
Shelli, yes we have done all the disk clean up etc. OH is very PC literate and has been looking at it but can't see why it is saying the disc is full as it actually shouldn't be.

He is now thinking of reformatting the disc, what do you think Ron?

Somethings not right, the used space and the free space usually add up to a bit less than the overall capacity of the drive, the figures you are reporting just don't add up.

Open My Computer, right click on the drive and left click Properties, that should give you the correct figures.

I keep getting the message that my D drive is almost full, and sure enough when I look at properties it shows very nearly full. However, when I explore the disc it shouldn't be full.

Used 70.8GB
Free 48.1 MB
capacity 70.9GB

Exploring there is one file 47.8MB
and one file 4KB

am I missing something? can anyone explain because OH can't sort it.
