Anyone else noticed an abundance of them this year?????? I'm not too bothered by them, they hurt, and they swell and they itch... but not by much. Poor hubby, however, they make a beeline for him..... he is living on piriton at the moment.

Did anyone else ever have a bite from a damsel fly? (like a dragonfly only smaller) ungrateful wretch... I was trying to save it from boiling alive in the conservatory when we go out in a bit.

Shan't bother again!!

Have not seen any at the moment, but was bitten years ago by horse flies in Switzerland, and was so ill for weeks after. I still have scars on my chest from them and this was over 30 years ago.

Do you mean Daddy Long Legs' Daff?

My poor little hands are swollen up and I have had to get some cream :-(.

The trouble is that we have had to have the windows open day and night because of the heat, so I expect they think they have free access to lunch on us.

Kybosh? I'll look out for it... there have been a couple in the conservatory, as well..... Susan,. no, the horsefly is different to the daddy longlegs... it looks similar to a fly, but longer and narrower... has a more rectangular rather that triangular shape, lol... I'll google in a mo, and put up the link... vicious devils, they are, as Teddy's Girl can testify. I hope your hands feel better soon.

Helen..... we had the greenfly, but they seem to be easing a little.... maybe that is what the horsefly lives on when it can't get a chunk of flesh!!

This may sound a daft question ,but are horse flies found just in the country or wherever there are horses? We have stables just over the road and a lot of the horses look like something from Medival times with their heads ,ears ,eyes covered. Is that for Horse flies ,normal flies or sun???

Jane ,
You are funny ,horse flies are everywhere this year, they are them big fat black flies.
Not only around horses, but they can bite and live off blood as well as pollen.

We have them in and around our place this year ,but we got one of them battery fly swat's, they fry when caught !!!!

Sorry about that insect lovers, but cant have them in the house ....

It's the females Helen... they have to have a chunk of mammal flesh to get them *in the mood* so to speak, lol!! I think they are more abundant in the countryside... cows and horses tend not to attack back!

They are the horrible flies you see around a horse or cows mouth, nose and eyes... they are seriously debilitating... squashing them is the only answer, I am afraid!

Hello Marilyn!!How are you?
Daff so that explains all the gear the horses have to wear ,poor things. They do look comical though. Thanks for that info.I can't understand why we haven't had any then. Not that I'm complaining lol.

If you wonder why Marilyn called me Jane ......it is because that is my real name.
