Berona Report 2 Aug 2010 00:48

When my family was young, I had a butcher who delivered three times a week. He was a cousin to one of the Bee Gees (he called him Robby) and not a delivery day passed that he didn't proudly tell me something new about him. I was too busy rearing babies at the time to pay any attention and was only vaguely aware of their existence. They didn't interest me at all - but that didn't stop him.

We seem to have had a spate of cooking programmes on TV this last year. I like to watch some of them, but most of them go over the top as far as I'm concerned. The most recent one looked too rehearsed and their process of elimination didn't always seem fair to me. Nigela has been the subject of 'skits', with someone taking the part of this smooth-talking, sexy lady - usually bending forward a lot to show her more endowed than Dolly Parton!

Persephone Report 2 Aug 2010 07:13

Ah but Berona
At least Nigella Lawson's are her own. Dolly on the other hand when she was sitting on the verandah in her Tennessee Mountain Home when she was younger was not that well endowed.

Sue

That "Come dine with me" is hillarious - I took to watching it and Britain's "Sixty minute make over" on daytime televsion when my foot was in the moonboot. The "Come dine with Me" program brings out the very worst in people, some of the things they said about each other. One woman instead of preparing her food she went and had a lie down and one of her guests ending up completing her main course for her.

You were also talking about the things that your mother says. My lovely Great Aunt who lived to 96 was out with her daughter in the supermarket and they were buying her one of those ready made birthday cakes for her 93rd birthday. The 93 year old told the check out operator that is for my 93rd birthday and the girl said oh but you only look to be in your seventies to which my aunt replied no this is my daughter here she is in her seventies. Audrey her daughter didn't know where to look.

Hello, for a fictitious example of Cusp's tale about Tony Curtis and Paul Newman, I remember an early episode of the Vicar of Dibley- where Alice mentioned that her cousin was Reggie Dwight. He came to play at a fete. And his name really was Reggie Dwight, but not the one who performs as Elton John.
The only brushes with fame in the entertainment field I've had are minor. Buster Fiddess (Les Anderson) was an Australian vaudeville comedian of the 40s and 50s. His son went to my primary school, and one year he and TV personality Bobby Limb put on a comedy skit at the annual school concert. It was very generous of them.
At high school there was a guy called Doug Parkinson (his brother was in my class) who of course was not famous then, but later had a career in pop music and musicals.
I am pained by "cooking" shows. The whole here is X travelling to beauty spots cooking as the goes. We even had Rick Stein in a local version.
I did like Nigella, probably due to her very attractive dark eyes and hair and (ahem) maybe her other attributes as well. But Master Chef and its ilk leave me cold. For the Aussies, where did that pretentious cravat wearing twat come from? Not that I care. In general I do detest UnReality TV.
It's even worse that the travelogue "Here I am alone in the Mongolian desert... with a picture crew, a sound crew, managers, directors and "fixers" to arrange everything.
Whinge whinge Oh well, It must be the cold August winds that arrived pretty well on time today.
~~~~~ to Diane (welcome back), Sue, Allan, Berona, Cappy- or is it Cuspy? and sorry to those I have forgotten.
Berona Report 2 Aug 2010 11:58
Hi Colin. I thought you would have liked Nigella. I don't know a man who doesn't like her.
You mentioned the cravat wearing twat. He looks like he never stops eating. I thought Garry was OK, but someone should have taken George in hand (or perhaps the producers didn't know any better). Each time George served up a dish to be judged, he always served himself FIRST, then the second plate was handed over the guest/lady to Matt, and it always reminded me of a dinosaur bone being handed to a caveman!
Another thing which annoyed was the way in which George kept reminding the contestants of how much time was left and constantly jumped up and down. I wanted to nail his shoes to the floor!
I wish that chefs could chef and not be live show hosts - just as I wish the same about footballers. Let them be players or commentators (if they must), but not show hosts - and they have no idea of how to be comedians - they just make fools of themselves.
I'm waiting to see how long it is before that chanel decides to make the cooking program more 'raunchy' to see if they get more ratings. They wrecked Big Brother by doing that -but did they learn from it? I liked that show for the first couple of seasons - until it became unnatural.
Well, that's my rant for the day/night. I'm off to my snug little bed to do some reading. Have a good night/day everyone!
Well, I had a very nice weekend. I did lots of baby holding and lots of house cleaning.
Little Eve is lovely naturally. We took her to the clinic to be weighed on Friday and she is now 8ib 5oz, all she needs to do now is to learn how to sleep more than three hours at a time and to realise that she doesn't need to feed constantly. My poor daughter is just so tired all the time. I suppose we all went through this stage and survived, but I do feel so sorry for her.
Welcome back Linda - you were missed.
Glad you had a nice weekend, and that little Eve is making good progress. Maybe her sleeping and feeding habits will improve shortly, and your daughter can get more rest - You are of course now excused any cleaning duties of your own house for a week as a reward for helping your daughter - feet up - bottle of wine!.
Good evening Tec.
We got back yesterday evening about 7.30pm and were only in the house five minutes before we went out again to a Yorkshire day bbq. We walked there and took a bottle of wine with us.It was too late by the time we got home to come onto the thread.
I will tell OH that you have excused me from housework this week.
I hope that you and the Duchess have both had a good weekend
Tecwyn Report 2 Aug 2010 22:53
I've heard it was Yorkshire Day, but have no idea what takes place - is it a celebrated over the County?
We had a busy weekend sorting furniture, as I aquired more, so had to make changes.
You are not also excused allotment duties, weather permitting.
Yorkshire Day just seems to be some sort of marketing ploy which has appeared over the last few years.
The tourist office tarts itself up a bit and the Yorkshire tea company send lots of small boxes of tea bags which we give out to the tourists. We usually get a large Wensleydale cheese to cut up and give out,but that didn't turn up this year, it must be the credit crunch
I hope you haven't overdone it hauling the furniture around. Are you going to send the surplus to an auction?
Hi Tec hope you and OH are well, I woke up this morning with a dry throat and thought to myself OH NO saw throat on it's way and I was right DOOH.
I have drunk Yorkshire Tea by Taylors of Harrowgate for years, jolly good cup of tea.
I gave an armchair to a neighbour, and the sofa we've had so long I'm getting the council to collect it - thank goodness no more washing those covers. In coming pm.
Hello Diane, it is just such a shame that we are so far away from my daughter, it would be lovely to be able to drop in and help her when she needed it.
I hope that your sore throat isn't too bad, you will just have to whisper on here
Hello Linda , Tec , CC and fellow thread posters .
Linda ....pleased to hear that Eve is gaining weight , I hope her sleeping settles down soon .
I haven't managed to get on here properly for a few days as the family have been clamoring ( there are quite a few of them and I'm sure they conspire to act as an avalanche sometimes ....lol ) .
I attempted to read back over the thread earlier . Tec , your cave sounds most peaceful " far from the madding crowd ? " but probably not , if poor Mrs Tec has to dress up for the tourists ......lol
Sue .....I'm glad to hear the neighbours birthday went well : ))
CC ....I hope you are back online very soon .
Edit to say ...hello Diane ....you posted when I was typing : ))
Hello Amanda, I have just had a quick glance at what I missed while I was away, but there were lots of pages.
Tec, our last sofas had washable covers and I was very pleased when we replaced them with the current leather ones, they are so much easier to look after
Hello all
The bl**dy computer nearly ended up through the window. It has ben doing weird things at start up.
First a warning that no antivirus software could be detected: clicked on my AV logo and it told me all was well an running.
Re-booted computer and it just froze, whirring like mad but not getting anywhere: probably not helped by me thumping the keypad in frustration.
I downloaded the photos yesterday si I will send them out soon.
Linda, I'm pleased that you had a nice time over the weekend
