You have a future? I hope that it is a sunny one as opposed to your shady past lol

Berona Report 12 Aug 2010 09:37

Now you've done it, CC. You've upset Allan and made him have to think about his future!

Berona

Berona Report 12 Aug 2010 09:42

Hi Linda. I am an all-rounder at books and movies - my one condition being that the plot must be possible. I don't like horror movies either - werewolves, talking ghosts and various types of unexplained miracles don't interest me.

Allan Report 12 Aug 2010 09:48

It's a bit gloomy at the moment, Linda, but that could just be a reflection of the outside weather!

Berona, have you read any Terry Pratchett books? Once you get into them the humour is fantastic!

LindainHerriotCountry Report 12 Aug 2010 09:59

I enjoy reading, but tend to read mainly when i go away. When I was teaching, I would bring home piles of books to mark every night,so once I had done those, I couldn't face reading anything else.Once I stopped working, i did start to read a lot, but now I tend to be doing things on my lap top on an evening, including chatting on here! That makes it late when I go to bed and I am too tired to read. I also hate reading just a chapter at a time, once i start a book, I don't want to put it down. I usually just do a Sudoku or crossword before I settle down.

I order sets of paperbacks from a book club because they are light to pack and better value. I read a book a day when I am away,so get through a lot of them. I am looking at the shelf now and can see a set of John le Carre Smiley novels, the complete Sherlock Holmes set,a set from Helen Dunmore and a set from someone called Victoria Andrews who ever she may be.Once I have read them, I mainly give them away, but I do keep some sets and read them again. I have the Inspector Morse set and lots of Agatha Christie ones which fall into that group. My sister belongs to a "serious" book club, so she passes on things which she thinks I ought to read

I must be on my way as it is 10am, so enjoy the rest of your evening down under.

Berona Report 12 Aug 2010 12:29

No Allan, I haven't read any by Terry Pratchett but will look out for them.
I usually like to get 'stuck into' a book and don't bother with short stories, but at the moment I am reading Jeffery Archer's "To Cut a Long Story Short" because it was chosen by the Greaders' Choice here on this site (General Topics) and I have enjoyed what I have read so far of the fourteen stories. Must go now and get on with it - our 'Reviews' are due to be written on 19th.

I am older than you CC - much older, but I am sane!

The Duchess and I are well thankyou. Herself has the set of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - I think she enjoyed them as she seemed to get through them quite quickly.

Today I left home at 7 am, arrived at the hospital at 8-15, was called at 8-45, went in the scanner, followed by an ECG. Left the hospital at 10 am, and was back home by 11-30. Brilliant.

Tecwyn Report 12 Aug 2010 21:32

I have found that if your hospital appointment involves the MRI or CT scanner then usually you are called on time, because the scanner has to be booked. But in any case, experience has taught me to ask for the earliest appointment possible, because later in the day the dept is invariably running late which means longer waiting time.

North Wales has heavy cloud cover tonight, so doubt there will be any star gazing here.

Everyone knows I'm sane - really they do!

Hello Tec ....Hello CC ~~~~~ to everyone else .

I've been a bit side tracked the past few days , so I've lost the track of this thread ( if there actually is one ....lol ) .

Hope the results of your tests are good Tec . I always think the worse thing about any sort of hospital buisness is the waiting for results .

I've been busy on Ancestory , looking at the Probate wills , I can't believe I've found as many of my lot as I have ....I'm chuffed indeed : ))

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 12 Aug 2010 21:51

Good Evening Amanda,

I had noticed you were awol, good to see you back

I don't think there was ever any track to this thread, we seem to go off the rails in all directions, and never know where we'll end up, but that's half the fun.

Usually the results of my tests say "Keep taking the tablets"

I must also check out the Wills on Ancestry - I do know that I had some wealthy ancestors, but sadly none filtered down to me.

Tec.

Amanda2003 Report 12 Aug 2010 21:54

LOL CC ...bless you for thinking I'm sane ....lol : )

I was surprised to find anything , some of them only left small amounts of money ( ie £ 164 1s 5d ) ..... but I was flabbergasted to see my G.G.Grandfather , on Dads side , left £ 3,089 17s 9d ( this being in 1884 ) ,he had worked for 40 odd years as a clerk in the London Missionary Society ..... never imagined him being filthy rich !! lol

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 12 Aug 2010 22:00

Thank you for having missed me Tec : ))

Yes , the reason I like this thread so much is because it meanders about in a most interesting manner , you never know what will be the current topic of discussion when you log in ....lol

I don't think it was only rich folk who made wills .....it is a really useful set of records ( often stating exact death dates etc ) I've been able to fill in several of my blanks .)

None of the " family " fortunes have filtered down to me either Tec ...but there is much more to life than money and such like in my opinion , finding stuff out about the past is riches enough for me .

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 12 Aug 2010 22:05

Your GG Grandfather must have been very thrifty Amanda, that was a good sum for a Clerk to accrue in 1884. Good for him.
I hope he didn't live like a church mouse only to leave it all to someone else.
I had a batchelor uncle who lived in very poor circumstances, no home comforts whatsoever. When he died he left am amazing amount of capital. I felt very sad about the way he lived, while sitting on all that money.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 12 Aug 2010 22:11

He probably was careful with his money , well he must have been to have saved that much over the years , he left it to his wife and she died three years later , the amount she left was a bit higher ! ( so she hadn't run out to buy all the latest fashions etc ...lol ) .
Knowing they had money does shed them in a different light than I'd been viewing them before . I think they used to be glad to help family members ( nephews and nieces etc ) .

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 12 Aug 2010 22:16

You are so right Amanda. There is much more to life than money. I am happy to have what I've got, and need nothing more, and realise how fortunate I am to be in that position. What problems I do have, no amount of money would alter.

I have been happily playing with the wills as well. I have found some excellent stuff. I have been mainly on OH's side, but am just venturing onto my side and have already struck gold (well a few pounds anyway) Plus it gives the date of death

Good Evening Linda,

Hope you had a happy day startling "Old Bill" on the allotment.
It's good you've had some success with the Wills on Ancestry.
