Hello everyone ,

Persey ....I 'm pleased to hear the musical box went down so well , I'm sure the little girl will treasure it for years to come .

CC .....it sounds as if the cocoa is working well for you , it's good to know you are getting some better phases of sleep .
Regarding the roses you mentioned , I've got a lovely red rose bush in my garden , it was my Mums and she used to call it the " Beasts Rose " as it reminded her of the one in " Beauty and the Beast " , two or three weeks before she passed away , she made me promise to dig it up , as she didn't want it left for whoever became the next tenant of her old flat . My OH , bless him , nearly did his back in digging it up , as it had been there for twelve years but we moved it to ours and replanted it , I didn't expect it to survive but the following Sept , on the anniversary of her death , I noticed one beautifully perfect rose.....it's been the same for each anniversary ( this will be the fourth ) and I've spotted a tiny bud , which I except will be at the point of perfection on the 9th of Sept : )))

Linda ....sorry to hear you had a wasted journey this morning , I bet you where really looking forward to seeing what you could find ......better luck next time .

I am glad the rose survived the move Amanda. I have a Forsythia which came from a cutting from dads garden and a crown of rhubarb on the allotment which was his as well.

September is a bad month for me as well. Dad died on Sept 8th,I can't believe it will be five years and mum died on Sept 26th last year. I still miss her dreadfully, every night when it gets to about 9pm, I still look at the clock and and would give anything to be able to pick the phone up and talk to her like I did every evening

My mother also died in September, 29th 2005. She lived for her garden, but I didn't think to take anything from the garden as a keepsake. I did however take a houseplant that she treasured, and I've kept it going so far.

Amanda it's lovely that you've managed to keep your mums old rose going, I'm sure it means a lot to you to see it flower each year - I hope it continues for many years to come. There a some roses that were here when we bought the house, and are known to be 30-40 years old.

Linda what a disapointment the antiques fair was cancelled. I love ferreting about in those places. I always look out for pieces of copper work from the Keswick School of Industrial Art. I've
got a few pieces, but they are becoming increasingly hard to find.

Perse, You do seem to be in an amazing pickle there - I would come to help if I lived a litte nearer.

CC............While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have to say as someone who had the greatest respect and admiration for the good works of the late Diana Princess of Wales, I found your reference to her somewhat offensive, and feel compelled to say so.

Tec It is so good of you to offer to help Perse, from the safety of the other side of the world.

I also had a house plant which belonged to dad. he was having problems with it, he almost gave up on it a few times. i took it when he died because mum was going to throw it out. I kept it going until a few months ago, but it finally gave up the ghost.

I am ploughing my way through the wills. I have a fairly unusual surname in one branch of my family and there are loads of them, mainly mine, so I am slowly wading through transcribing them and adding them to my tree

Hello everyone - I'm up very early this morning. I slept till 5 o'clock and that was it.

What a shame the antiques fair was cancelled. I bet you were disappointed Linda but look at how much money you probably saved:-)) By the way - my OH and I still hold hands too.

How many generations of little girls were and still are given musical jewellery boxes - I well remember the ones with the ballerinas inside. My daughter still has hers complete with the plastic beads my MIL gave to her for dressing up. My granddaughter also has one very similar but she has a jewellery collection to rival any adult:-))

September is a sad month for some of you. I was only thinking the other day that you are nearing the anniversary of your mum’s passing, Linda. October is the month I lost my dad 4 years ago and I always feel very unsettled at that time.

Good morning Sue, it must be a day for waking up early, I was wide awake by 7am and as the paper hadn't arrived I logged on and used the computer for a while until the paper turned up.

I am glad that I am not the only one who still holds hands.

Amanda2003 Report 15 Aug 2010 21:19

Good evening Linda and Tec .....seems we three share the link of losing our parent / s in September : ( I wish you well Linda as you are facing the one year hurdle , regarding your dear Mum . It does get easier I suppose , sort of .

I had no idea roses could last that long Tec ! I have to confess to not being very good with them in general , though I do try my best .
Just before my Dad died ( in Oct 06 ) he had planted a number of lovely Irises ( his favorites ) in pots in the garden , Mum couldn't bear the thought of seeing them in bloom the following Spring , so she gave them to me and I had the joy of seeing them all flower in Spring 07 , unfortunately I'm not awfully good with Irises either ....lol ..... I think I had about 3 of the original 7 flower this year .

I'm pleased to hear your still finding wills Linda ...I might nip back for another dabble in awhile ...lol

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 15 Aug 2010 21:22

I've only found a handful of people with wills although I do have 3 from the National Archives site from the late 1700's and early 1800's. Very difficult to read but I need to spend some time transcribing them.

Good morning to the early bird : ))

I hadn't spotted you as I was busy typing and rushing round the house looking for " bite " cream , having just realise that something has bitten me on the bridge of the nose ( right between my eyes !! ) , I do hope it stops swelling or I'm going to look like a Klingon .....lol

Hello Amanda, it is odd how some plants are not happy, the wrong type of soil I suppose. As a little girl, I remember a garden full of pinks and carnations, the smell was lovely. we have had several goes at growing them here, but they never survive so we have given up. We did put something or other under the last lot, but they still died off

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 15 Aug 2010 21:27

Oh dear Amanda, that sounds bad, but I can't help but have a little smile at the image you have conjured up as well

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 15 Aug 2010 21:31

It is strange Linda ......I always think that some folk are just not destined to grow certain things ..........I can't keep Thyme for one instance , I've bought several different sorts , done the grit in the soil , tried having them in pots , no matter what I do , they don't survive .

LOL ......I've realised that Tec will back pedal and not let me be Head Gardener when he gets his Mansion at this rate .....lol

Edit to say ....I think I'll get away with the bite as I got the insect stuff on it rather sharpish ....phew ....lol

.Good Evening Linda, and Amanda,
Good Morning Sue,

Linda I think it's an achievement to keep any housplant going for a very long time, they all seem to have their "shelf life" and give up no matter what you do. The Will searching sounds very exciting. I will get going on it this week, when I've upgraded Ancestry.

Amanda I spoil my roses with rose food from the garden centre or ironmongers, seems to work. I'm no good with irises, they never do well for me, I think it's the soil.

Sue, You are up early, you'll be ready for bed by tea time.

Tec.

Tecwyn Report 15 Aug 2010 21:36

Amanda, I've been bitten to death in the garden the last few day - I wouldn't mind a bite on my nose - but I've been bitten in unmentionable places - it's torment. LOL

Don't worry - even Head Gardeners have their failures.

I have several different Thymes in the garden Amanda, we chipped holes off the corners of some of the flagstones on the patio and planted some of the smaller types there to break it up a bit. They smell nice when you accidentally tread on them

SueMaid Report 15 Aug 2010 21:38

Hello Tec - yes I am up early. I hate tossing and turning so I decided that I may as well get up and put some washing on. It's a good day to wash - sunny and windy.

I get annoyed at some garden centres who are happy to sell bulbs for plants that don't grow where we are. Snowdrops and some tulips grow well up the mountains but as we are a 40 minute drive away the climate changes enough to make growing them difficult.

Amanda I thought you were ignoring me just as I'm ignoring that enormous spot on your nose:-))

Well I'm pleased that Thyme grows well for you LInda .....I bet it smells lovely in your garden : ))

Rather you than me with bites in the unmentionables Tec ....lol ....you have my sympathy , I'll be ok as long as I don't go cross eyed if the spot on my nose gets into my field of vision .

I'd never ignore you Sue and thanks so much for noticing my current affliction .
