Morning Linda, afternoon Berona:-)

Linda, the photo is amazing. They are both buried together in my birth town of Huddersfield. I so wish I could visit them in person. I may send some money over to my cousin and ask could she plant something nice for me. She has done an amazing job of cleaning up their resting place, it was pretty run down when she first saw it - I am forever in her debt!

Berona, I hope you are feeling better. Take care xx

I am actually going to Huddersfield on Friday, to visit the records office there. My mum came from one of the villages near there. i am taking a friend who doesn't drive. I don't think mum would have recognised the town centre now, all the buildings have been cleaned up and it looks very smart

Linda, Lucky you:-)
Is Huddersfield a long drive from where you live?
I would imagine everything has changed a lot from when my family were last there, over 40 years ago. I'm sure it would still be beautiful. I would give anything to go back and re trace my families footsteps:-)

It is only about an hour and a quarter from here, depending on the traffic.
When I used to go there as a little girl to visit mums family, lots of the buildings were black and grimy, but the ones in the town centre have been cleaned,so the stonework looks nice, some of the centre has been pedestrianised as well, so it has a nice atmosphere

The villages round about seem to be pleasant places to live now, but when my mum was a girl, I don't suppose it was that nice as everyone worked in the small mills which were all over the place. Still it was in the country side, which must have been a lot better than living in the centre of one of the large industrial cities

Berona Report 17 Aug 2010 11:02

Hello Linda. Sorry I took off after my previous post and didn't see you there, but it's nice for you to have a talk to Carole. She doesn't seem to be here in the morning (your evening) so it was good that you could catch each other to-day.
We have had a mild sunny day, although still a little cold for sitting outside, unless we can sit in an enclosed area. Much better to sit inside behind glass - this is when sunrooms are very popular! Once the sun goes down, though, people who feel the cold like I do, soon put the heaters on.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Aug 2010 11:06

It was noticeably chilly here last night as well Berona, not enough to need heating I am pleased to say, after all it is supposed to be the height of summer
According to the temperature icon I have on my computer desktop, it is only 16 Celsius out there, which doesn't seem like summer to me.At least it is not raining, but that will probably wait until I have to go out later on.

Berona

Berona Report 17 Aug 2010 11:23

That made me laugh, Linda. 16 in summer. You must think we are very 'soft' here with me talking about switching the heater on. To-day's temp here was 17c and we are nearly finished with winter. I don't think we have had a day this year lower than 16.
Just shows how acclimatised we are. My OH told me he wore nothing to bed when he first came to Australia, then gradually wore cotton short-legged pyjamas, but after a few years here, he was happy to wear the long-legged warm winter pyjamas each year.

I don't know how you cope with some of the high temperatures, but I suppose that your houses are built to keep the heat out and you have air con. We are the other way around, the houses are designed to keep the heat in and we have central heating but no aircon

Enjoy the rest of your evening, i need to go out and about now

Thought Id pop in before dinner. Today was mostly wet, drizzly wet with mist half way down the mountain, now the sun has appeared. I spent the day doing "jobs" boring jobs.

Carole, How nice to see you here again, as Berona said, we do miss people when they don't appear for a while. I was thinking about Pam recently, but she may still be in Sydney. Hope you get the bulbs planted, tedious job, but worth it when they flower. Good about the photo you received, sad subject, but still a link with the ancestors.

Linda I hope you didn't get soaked delivering the books, and hopefully the books stayed dry too.

Berona I don't think you've gone soft in your climate, it's what you're used to isn't it. It was 16 C here today, and will be 11 C tonight. Extremes of temps don't suit me these days, so mostly I'm happy with whay we get.

Diane, I'm glad to see you are ok, just busy - how's the head?

Well dinner is nearly ready, so I'd best be off here - hopefully catch everyone later.

I didn't get wet Tec, the dreadful weather forecast we watched last night turned out to be wrong. It was cold this morning, but the sun came out and it was a glorious afternoon. It reached the dizzy heights of 22 degrees'

An extra bonus was that lots of the old people who we normally deliver books to seem to have gone on holiday. OH thinks that they must all have gone to Ibiza clubbing. That meant we did the round in record time, so we had time to go to the supermarket and do a large shop - he really enjoyed that ! The Aussie wine was 25% off so naturally I had to do my bit to support their economy

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Aug 2010 20:46

Wish I'd known your old people had gone to Ibiza clubbing Linda, I would have gone with them.

I'm quite sure your OH was enthralled at the opportunity to do the supermarket - I just hope you will let him share that bargain Aussie wine, well one glass anyway.

22 degrees? - that's tropical.

We had two callers at the door today. One was Jehovah's Witnesses - I think they had come to save me!
The other was a young man who waved an ID Card at me and announced he had just come out of prison, and did I want to buy any cleaning materials? The items he was selling were very expensive compared to the usual shop price. I noticed there was a mini bus of similar young men in the village, brought in from somewhere. This one had a strong Liverpool accent. I do wonder if these ex offenders are being exploited,, and if going round the doors in a remote Welsh village selling things in the rain really is to do with rehabilitation. Just a thought.

I would have thought that going round the doors in a remote Welsh village, they were casing the houses. We get them round here too, but I never buy anything from people at the door.

In one house we lived in, we used to get lots of Mormans coming round, I felt sorry for some of them and used to give them sanctuary for a while. They were on a losing cause trying to convert me, but to be fair they just seemed to like having a chat and of course they are responsible for the IGI which is so useful

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Aug 2010 21:30

We used to get the Mormons when we lived in the town. Usually young American men in black suits, white shirts, black ties, riding bikes. One told me they were doing it during their Gap Year from Uni.
Some of my paternal ancestors emigrated to a place called Bountiful Utah in 1856. I have photo's of their graves, all in the Mormon Cemetery in Salt Lake City - so they must have been converted.

I saw a TV programme about it once, but of course, I can't remember it. I think they have to do a year spreading the gospel

Hello you two - I'm butting in on your conversation. Still it's my thread and if I want to butt in I will:-))

Tec - you asked after Pam. She has been to Sydney and back home. We were hoping to meet up but it didn't work out. Pam's brother was still quite ill so she spent quite a bit of time with him. I haven't heard from Pam for awhile so I hope all is well.

Carole - it was lovely to see you. Stay beautiful:-)

*clears throat, excuse me butting in!

Does anyone know if Perse (Persephone) is away or anything? I haven't seen her around lately and I need her for the greader's thread.)
Thanks

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Aug 2010 21:55

Good Morning Sue,
Please feel free to butt in anytime, it is, as you say, your thread. Who are we to say you can't butt in - we wouldn't dare, well I wouldn't, Linda might, you know how brazen she is.

Sad you didn't get to meet up with Pam, I hope all is well with her too, and yes it was nice to see Carole here.

Hello Ann, no Perse is around, she was on the thread yesterday I think it was. We will tell her to start reading very quickly

Thanks, I sent her a PM but it has not been opened. Not sure of the time difference/what time it is where she is but maybe she is at work.
