We feel deprived if there is no tomatoes in the house. They are so useful not just eaten raw - but I put them in all sorts of meals. We were camping once and OH said he would like cheese sauce and I did not take flour with me to make a roux - so made it out of tomatoes, cheese and garlic. I love the smell of fresh tomatoes - I only get the vine ripened ones - I go around the fruit shop sniffing the pineapples, tomatoes etc - they have to smell right before I purchase.

Hello Persey......you certainly sound very sane to me : )

I signed up ages ago to Tribal pages but I haven't been back to it for a very long time , I'll have to try and find my logging in info .

Good for you Diane in your plain speaking , hopefully now that you have all talked together things will be a lot more comfortable for you all , your Aunt included .I hope the antibiotics soon kick in .

I have six tomato plants in the greenhouse of different varieties. We like to eat them all year round, but of course I have to buy them most of the time.
There re so many now that i can't eat them all, which is why I am making the chutney. It also has cooking apples in it, so that is a good way to use those up a s well.

Amanda -

You were all talking about Birthday cakes the other day and I missed it. I know of a little girl who wanted a cake with a dolly in it – so her grandmother made her one. There it was in all its glory a lovely fruit cake dress with ever so gorgeous icing. The cake was duly cut and a sultana was stuck to dolly’s bottom. The little girl announced that dolly had done a poo in the cake and none of the kids would eat it.

I like crumpets as well , slightly burnt and oozing in butter for me : ))

My Tomatoes look and feel wonderful but I haven't tried sniffing them , perhaps I'll have a go with the next ripe one .

My dad would always make apple & tomato chutney he used to also make tamarillo (tree tomatoes in those days) chutney - I was thinking about this the other day the cost of tamarillos makes the idea of making chutney from them completely prohibitive. The other one he did a lot of was a red cabbage pickle - it was delicious.

Linda my granddaughter gave me a tomato plant last year to grow in my window, it got as tall as the window and I think had about 20 tomato's over the time it produced them, I offered her the first one that ripened and she said Nan I don't like them, my responce was ( then why grow the plant ) she said I just wanted to see if it would grow.

Good evening Amanda, I don't think I said that before, sorry hun. I am glad I had a talk to nephew and got thing's sorted out.

Hello Amanda,

I wasn't ignoring you, but you arrived after I'd gone to get something to eat.

Hope you had a good day,

Tec.

You can't beat fresh grown tomatoes Diane. The ones in the supermarket for most of the year are tasteless because they have been picked before they are ripe

Evening Tec ..... how long did it take you decide what you'd have for supper ? ...lol

Sorry to hear that your water is off , I hope the workmen get it finished before you go off to bed .

It has been a lovely day here in Norfolk , lots of sunshine and I managed to get some gardening done , so it looks slightly less like a jungle out there now .

I love tamarillos Linda - they are quite a versatile fruit - go lovely with custard or yoghurt and you can even slice them and fry with bacon. My MIL would take the skins off them and slice them length wise pour golden syrup over them and leave in the fridge for a several hours - really scrummy. I like to have them in the fridge along with kiwi fruit but I do not like feijoas. Maybe because I do not like the smell of them.

Love the cake story Perse.

Were has Tec gone, have we frightened him away with all this sane talk.

Linda I wished I lived near you, all that chutney, soup and other thing's you make MMMMM make's me feel hungry.

Perse I love pickled cabbage too, when I was pregnant with my eldest son ( who is 36 today ) I had a graving for pickled cabbage and even put it on my sunday roast, sometime's I would open a jar and just sit and eat it with a fork.

I love the story Persey - I can well imagine the looks on their faces:-)) Joel would've said in his most disgusted voice "oh that's gross".

I love home grown tomatoes. We usually grow cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes and nice big ones for sandwiches. We usually have enough for family. We used to swap veggies with the neighbour but she is finding it too difficult to look after a veg. garden after her OH passed away.

Amanda I started thinking what I wanted for supper tonight a week last Friday :))

Well the men from the Water Co have gone away for the night, but we have no water - I could always run down to the river with a bucket.

You should have filled a the bath,so you could fill a bucket to flush the toilet,

Amanda2003 Report 31 Aug 2010 23:06

Tec ...... you'll get indigestion if you go off into the dark to fill your buckets with river water now ......... and I must say , that's a very complicated eating system you have going there.........lol

LOL Linda

I always thought Australia would have more fruit and veg than us but I was very disappointed at the selection over there. We have large corners of our supermarkets devoted to fruit and veg and we have a lot of F & V shops.

Come summer my OH will be down at our nearest fruit market where he buys the cheap windfalls (these don't get to the shop floor in the bigger establishments) and come back with mixtures of peaches/nectarines/peacherines and plums. Me I only like George Wilson Plums - but they have a very short season (about a month at longest).
