There they all go! I shouldn't have read the posts first. However, I can join you in talking about help with the family. My Mum had a very good habit of writing on every photo who, where & when it was taken. She also had a scrapbook with all the newspaper photos of any of the family, as well as the cuttings of birthday wishes, social snippets and birth, marriage and death notices. She even made sure she wrote the date of publication on the cutouts. She had passed on by the time I got the bug for family history, so what she did has been extremely helpful to me. I keep promising myself I'll do the same, but always forgot. These days my photos start off in the computer and I do put them in order and date them.

My dad didn't have much in the way of photos and my mother didn't label all of hers. But because I am the genealogy person my grandmother's sister's daughter gave me two really nice little photos, one of my great grandmother and the other - her husband to be. Also have a photo of my great great grandparents curtesy of her. I have my mother's four generations photo of her as a baby on her mother's knee with her mother's father and his mother. This old great granny was born in Ireland in 1827 and died here in NZ 1920.
My OH's uncle was one of those who dated everything - all newspaper clippings, photos etc and I found in one of his books the date and my name with when I told him that the person mentioned was one of my ancestors. He dated everything - even to the point of on the back of his mattress he had pinned a piece of card with the dates of each time he turned the mattress over. Very sad that he is not part of my tree - I don't include OH's family he has all his big books on the ancestry that goes back forever - there are paintings etc of them as well.

Persey, is your OH's family posh, famous.....or perhaps infamous. I have two books that mention ancestors. One book details an ancestor's exploits in the Dardenelles on board a submarine in WW1 and the other book names my great grandfather and describes his death in France in WW1. I also have a picture of his grave and a copy of a newspaper article which mentions him, my great grandmother and the children one of whom is my grandmother.

My ancestors are also in books and one of them my great great grandfather on my dad's side - was known as a bit of a Villain - he charged high rent on his properties. ( we charge at the lower end of the median for rents on our properties before anyone says anything - we also give them a grocery voucher for Christmas) Have a photo of him... there are others also that are in pioneering history of New Zealand.
OH has Lords, and a lot of Landed Gentry and even goes back to Royalty.

I shall have to practice my curtsey in case Mr Perse ever comes on here. I have a book as well which includes the family tree for the top of my mothers family. This was the lot which went to Australia,s et up a wood yard in Geelong and sent the money back to England where it was used to support the Methodists and to build a new chapel

Morning Linda and everyone:-)
I haven't found anyone yet, famous or otherwise in my family. I did recently find out that my GG grandfather who was killed in a coal mining accident was the first person to be buried in the cemetery where he was laid to rest. Actually, now that I think about it I do have an author in the family. She wrote about our ancestors who were mill owners in Yorkshire. That reminds me I must track down those books and read them!
I found someone on Ancestry the other day who has some of my ancestors in her tree, so I contacted her. I asked does she back up her tree with certificates etc but I haven't heard back. So I'm assuming she hasn't/doesn't - Its a real shame and Ive noticed its very common. What confuses me is why!!!
We are expecting some nasty weather this weekend, lots of rain and very cold. I am longing for some warmer days, it seems our winter has dragged on too long:-(

Hello Carole, Mill owners sound posh, I know I have the top of my mothers tree who were fancy goods manufacturers employing lots of people, but by the time it got down to nearer my mother, all the money was in another branch and they were all working in mills not owning them.
It is nice when you find out little facts such as the one about your cemetery.
All of the central lines on mine and OH's side of the tree are backed up by certificates, it is frightening when I tot up the cost, but I have lots of side lines where I can't possibly buy the certificates. So maybe your contact is the same and your ancestors are on one of her side lines. If anyone asks about any of my side lines I share the info, but make it clear that it is just from censuses and bmd's

Hi Linda
Mill owners do sound posh:-) I bet their lives were very interesting.
It was really nice to find out about my GG grandfather and the cemetery, sad too! I now have the inquest report on his death, also very sad because my great grandfather who was only 16 years old at the time was present when his father was killed. He had to give his account on his fathers death and the terrible accident. I actually cried when I read it. He left behind his widow and 7 children, so very very sad:-((
I have certified all my direct line, like you, I am not aquiring the side lines. I also share all I have with others in my family and they do the same - which is great. This person I contacted is a side line. The sister to my GG grandmother, who I think is the witness on my GG grandparents marriage certificate, the lady I contacted is a direct descendant of the sister? of my GG grandmother. I may have to buy the certificates just to satisfy myself otherwise I'll just keep wondering.
Linda, I love working on my tree, it is my escapism - I forget all my troubles when I'm up in my tree:-))

Hello ladies! I was going to close the computer down but decided to have a look-in first. Good to see you posting, Carole, we've missed you. I'm on my way to bed in the hope that the earlier I go to sleep, the earlier I will wake. Got caught again by the parcel post man. He came to my front door this time but came at 7am and I didn't wake until after 8am! At least, he has improved. He usually sits in his van out in the street and writes a card - forcing me to find my way to the post office to pick up the parcel myself.Fortunately, my dtr came and saw the card and insisted on going to the P.O. for me. Came back quite happy that she found a good present to give her O H for Father's Day. Found it in the P.O.shop. So her time wasn't wasted. I'm glad of that because I don't like using people and she already does a lot for me. Well, I'm going now. Goodnight/good afternoon to all.

Good morning/evening all. Hope you are all well.
I have got up to the awful news of an earthquake in Christchurch in New Zealand. There isn't much info at the moment but it sounds serious. I don't think our Persey is on the south island - at least I hope she's not in or near Christchurch.
Poor Carole is in an area that is forecast to have a really bad storm so I'm hoping all is well for her and her family. Batten down those hatches, Carole:-))

Good Morning Sue,
Hope you are well this morning.
That is bad news about the earthquake in Christchurch - heard nothing about it here so far. Persey lives in or near Aukland on North Island, so thankfully she will be safe. I just hope it is not too bad for the people of Christchurch, my thoughts are with them. Also hope Carole and family suffer no damage in the storm forecast.
It's been another lovely hot day here - this evening I watered the garden and all the pots with the hosepipe as everything is bone dry. They forecast rain for Monday. My garden has been full of colour this year, and still is. There isn't room for anything else, though I may buy some new bulbs for the Spring - the ones that came up last Spring were a bit tired looking and quite a few were "blind" There is a miniture variety of daffodil I like called Tete a Tete, so will get those again.
Tec.
