Pam - I could give you ten years (eleven after next week) so maybe I was listening to Bob a little earlier than you were. I took more notice of him once the celebrities began to come here - like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles; or if he went overseas and brought back interviews. It was something new then.
You are about Tec's age, so don't let him tell you he is old - it will make you feel you are old! We can't have that. We are as old as we feel!

3 days' retirement? That must be a record.
I've retired a few times and when I do, after about three weeks, I wonder how I ever found time to go to work! Then, I would go back to work and after I settled in, again, I would wonder how I ever found time to keep myself occupied when I was retired!

Well, I must be off. Need to do a little bit of h****w**k. Enjoy your day, Pam - and sleep well, Sandie (I think that's all that is left, isn't it?). Talk to you later.

Pamela Report 20 Oct 2010 01:17

lol Berona. That sounds like a real catch 22 situation.

I enjoy working. But it's lots better being casual. It means I know that when I work a 50 or 60 hour week I only have to do it for a couple of weeks and then I get a break. The bank balance looks good afterward, too. but that's not the only reason that I work. I enjoy the people contact because I get to meet all sorts of people.

I must say, though, that after a couple of days of work it's really good to be at home alone with no TV, no radio etc. I enjoy it.

Isn't it funny how men always seem to think they are 'old'? I've met so many men around my age who seem to think it's amazing that I'm still working. Women don't seem to be so surprised, I think.

I chose the words finished work rather than retired, cos I may talk up part time work in the future, not for a bit tho.
Idon't know how I managed to work full time with 2 children.
They are 24 and 22 now both stilll living at home and with all the ho*sewo*k washing and cooking for 4 adultswouldn't have time for work and 'me' time too.
well lovely chatting to you ,but must get myself off to bed now.

Sydneybloke Report 20 Oct 2010 10:33

Hello thread and members from me, also.
Picking up on a couple of points on the board over the past few days:
There are a few threads that I have contributed to, Allan's Ethics was one.
I have also contributed to one of Carole formerly Tinkerbelle's long running threads.
I have not been very active over the past few months as I have been a bit down (like many others, I get like that even in Spring).
Also, I have been very busy with work. I now have a company vehicle, a Toyota utility (sedan type cabin in front, cargo tray behind). It cuts down my travel time to about 90 minutes a day but driving, especially to work, in Sydney traffic is un-relaxing. At least on the train I could read, or just watch the scenery. And I always got a seat in the morning, but often had rto stand in the afternoon trains.
Last pay week I worked nearly 50 hours over 6 days- a lot as I am actually part time- 30 hours over 4 days, I do get paid for the hours I work.
A quick comment on spelling checking. I don't think the GR site does the checking, it is the Internet browser you use, I have used Internet Explorer, which does not have a spell check capability, I normally use Google Chrome both at work and at home. It has a spell-check function. I have also tried Mozilla Firefox which has one too.
I used to say that I would retire the weekend after my 60th birthday, when I would be able to get my retirement fund money tax free. Pension age here is 65, although that is gradually being raised to 67 for people born after about 1955. One younger sister retired some years ago due to ill health, the other one (the younger) looks like following. Her problem is catastrophic burn-out after nearly 40 years teaching, most of them in a small rural school.
So it looks like I will be the last of my family working. I made a private commitment to myself that I would continue until our company's next accreditation as a testing laboratory, about May-June next year.
I will keep an eye on this thread for a while, but want to do other things.

Morning Linda and everyone:-)

We had a lovely day here today, too:-) Tomorrow will be warmer, 25 degrees, spring has finally sprung!!
Ive put some more photos of my garden up on FB, some of the flowers are coming on nicely, the garden smells beautiful!! There's a lot of work to be done outside, now the weather is getting better, we will be able to spend more time out there.

What are your plans for the day?

Hi all~~

Tec
I''ve just watched 'Snowdonia1890 ' and wondered if you know where it was filmed, my guess is Blaenau Festiniog...?.. the brochure I have doesn't say and I missed the final credits ,doh :(
Coal House was filmed in Blaenavon a few miles from me.
Just nosey .lol.. thinking about it bil may know if you don't:)

Be back in a bit as haven't read the back over the thread yet !

Hi Sandie - re Snowdonia 1890.

I am not absolutely certain, but I think the series may have been filmed around Bethesda. The reason I think this is that there was a painted board in the quarry saying "Penrhyn Quarry" the Penrhyn quarries were in the Bethesda area, being owned by Lord Penrhyn of Penrhyn Castle.
Also one of the lads pointed out Snowdon, the view he had of Snowdon would have been about right from the Bethesda area.
Would be interesting to find out for sure.

Regarding the girl made to wear the "Welsh Not" around her neck for speaking Welsh in school. I remember my Nain (Grandmother) telling me that she was caned until she bled for speaking Welsh, but at home they only spoke Welsh, she knew hardly any English.. thank goodness times and attitudes have changed for the Welsh since then. Cymru am Byth.

*$parkling $andie* Report 20 Oct 2010 21:02

I did think Bethesda Tec, but hubby thought it likely to be Blaenau,

Neither of us have spent much time in either , just travelled thro from S to N, but Blaenau always struck me as such a grey place and is /was a slate town, and the times been thro it it has always been grey and wet :(Not one of the prettier places Wales has to offer.

As for the 'Welsh Not' my nan born in 1880 in S E Wales was not Welsh speaking, so didn't suffer such barbaric treatment, g' father was born near Bristol and moved to the village after the Severn tunnel was built and tunnellers were needed in this area for the development of the railway thro the village. Other grandparents were born locally too so didn't speak Welsh. What a dreadful thing to have to have suffered, so called PC was around and kicking in those days ! or should I say racism !!
Only my aunt by marriage born in 1911 was Welsh speaking and thankfully the 'Welsh not' didn't affect her.

Good Evening Diane - I hope you've had a good day - been a lovely sunny day here, but quite cold.

Do you know I still haven't tried that Fiery Jack for my knees even though they're very painful. Twice been in the chemist since you said about it, and twice forgot - hopeless, need a nanny lol.

When I have time I will PM you some simple Welsh words to learn, and how to pronounce them, you can practice on your son - that'll teach him lol.
