The joiner spent all day sanding the worktops back, the oak is back to it's pristine state now. we gave the kitchen a good clean after he left because the dust was all over the place. He is coming back in the morning to put the. oil on. We will have to leave it another day before we can put all of the stuff back. I haven't opened any of the cupboards yet

I haven't even started on the rest of the house yet Amanda as it was dinner time by the time we had cleaned the kitchen

Linda , had the dust travelled all over the house ?

The work tops sound wonderful , you'll be scared to use them in case they get bashed about again ....lol

It doesn't look too bad in the rest of the house Amanda because I kept all the doors closed, but when I was in the study keeping out of the way, I could taste it in the air, so I am sure it will settle out

That's what I hate about renovations - the mess. When we had our bathroom done the first day was a nightmare. We had the bath and old shower recess taken out and the house was full of men walking through the kitchen and hallway with big boots full of concrete dust.

Oh well..........

Linda we had beech worktop in our last house, I sanded that back twice, but we decided to have a formica worktop here, we are going to replace it soon.

We toyed with the idea of replacing this one with a granite one Tec, but the oak one is 10mm thicker than the granite ones, so there would be a gap before the tiles started. It is expensive having it sanded, but nothing in comparison to replacing it

Before we renovated the kitchen we had laminate on our bench tops but it went very dull over the years. Now we have a very easy clean new type of laminate that looks very nice. Our neighbour has granite bench tops - looks lovely, very expensive but she isn't very happy with it. It's a small kitchen and the granite looks very 'heavy'. My kitchen gets a lot of light and with the cupboards and bench tops being light in colour too it's my favourite room.

Linda my sister has granite worktops, that were very expensive. She says that you have to be so careful with them as they are easier scratched than you would think.
That 10mm gap could be quite neatly filled with white plastic trim that is available in builders merchants.

I'm off to the kitchen to make tea and toast now.

The best thing I got was the ceramic stove top. So easy to clean - I love it. After 2 1/2 years it still looks new.

We just have formica work tops , on the whole they are still in reasonably good condition , they have been in place for 16 years and only have one serious bit of damage and that was caused when I went completely berzerk one day and bashed the worktop several times with a hefty rolling pin ! apart fom that they have stood the test of time ....lol

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 9 Nov 2010 22:18

lol Tec, I don't think white plastic trim is quite me. We would take the bottom row of tiles off and have a granite upstand.
Dark granite would not look good in my kitchen Sue, but you can get a light type. I do prefer the wood though. The joiner worked hard all day, OH was glad that he hadn't done it, he is very good at DIY,but there are times when it is better to pay someone else to do the hard work
