So much for Sue's baloney yesterday about 'handling' men :0))

I'll tell her you said that!!

Tecwyn Report 4 Mar 2010 23:09

Allan, They delude themselves that we can be "handled" . But if it gives them a sense of power and control - let's amuse them, poor misguided little fillies.

Berona,
No nothing is free in Wales, and I know costs have risen alarmingly, as have salaries, but how can it possibly cost that much to raise a child.
Where do they get their figures from?

Tec

Berona

Berona Report 4 Mar 2010 23:18

Those figures are arrived at by journalists who are too lazy to go out and look for 'news' - they sit at their computers and make up stories without gathering any facts whatsoever.

Allan

Allan Report 4 Mar 2010 23:20

Tec I think that they take all costs into consideration: clothing, food, school costs, cost of sports, pocket money etc. It can soon add up

Our two were never into sports so we didn't have the usual running aroun on the weekends, but my daughter was in both the school band and the City of Bunbury Concert band.

Taking her to rehearsals and to competitions certainly put the miles on the car!

The cost of University over here is also becoming prohibitively expensive, particularly for Country Students!

Tecwyn Report 4 Mar 2010 23:25

I think you're right there Berona, even if you cost the upbringing of a child from an affluent background, nanny, public school fees (private school really) university, foreign holidays, etc etc, I still cannot see that it costs that much.

Tecwyn Report 4 Mar 2010 23:34

I take your point Allan,
My grand daughter does a 60 mile round journey by car every day to an expensive school. She goes on two costly foreign educational trips a year, plus other trips. Her sports equipment is expensive too.
Then her hobby of horse riding and competitions has to be financed, and social activities. It is certainly expensive and she is fortunate that her parents can afford it.
Her university costs have to be found in a couple of years too.

Tec

Berona Report 4 Mar 2010 23:37

Do they say that is PER child? Children from affluent families could cost more than that, where a child who is one of six could not cost anything like that - it would work out to more than the family income!

Allan

Allan Report 4 Mar 2010 23:41

Tec, Berona

Whilst the costs are expensive, they may be based on the "top of the range" items like designer clothing, a couple of take away meals each week amd mobile phone costs.

I think that the question should be: "how can these costs be reduced?"

Most schools in WA certainly sell second hand text books etc

Allan

Tecwyn Report 4 Mar 2010 23:45

The way it was put Berona was,

"The latest figure given to raise "A " child from birth to 21 years of age"

My maths are not good at this time of night, but a breakdown would be interesting.

Anyway, I have to go to bed now folks,
So enjoy your day Berona and Allan,

Goodnight

Well, I'm going - but not far. Tec - I know where you will be going, so no problem. Take your calculator to bed with you and work that one out!
As for you, Allan - I'm going to have a turn on my treadmill, then back here to do some transcribing - so I will be looking in between breaks! Have a good day!

Hello again Allan

Sorry, I got kicked off the site and couldn't get back in:-(
I was trying to answer you on the other thread before I was rudely interrupted. It was quite odd cos earlier in the day, I'd sent them an email letting them know that I could not use the search feature when I view my tree, I also told them I had to use Ancestry to view my tree. I wonder if that was the reason I was kicked off?

Tec, No cake left, sorry:-( I'll bake you one when we take our cruise.
I know what you mean about the cost of the upkeep of bringing up children. My daughter is having private lessons for horse riding - at $65.00 a pop, (about 130 pounds).

Good morning Carole and Allan if he is lurking.

Given my age, it would be somewhat of a miracle if I were to have another child. Last night I was discussing the forthcoming baby with my daughter. She is starting to produce a spreadsheet with all the equipment she will need. For each item she is going to have up to three different alternatives (Yes I know, but she is a research scientist,so that is how she does things) The two sets of doting grandparents to be will then vie with each other to purchase most of this stuff!

Carolee

Carolee Report 5 Mar 2010 09:47

Hello Linda

Is this your first grandchild?
I must say having a baby can be very expensive, especially if its the first. I thought the purchase of a change-table was a waste of my money, because I much preferred changing baby on the floor - it felt a lot safer. The same with a baby bath, with my daughter, I bathed her in the bathroom sink. She was a bit premature and weighed only 6 pounds at birth.

We have rain again, here. Its expected to rain all weekend. This Monday is Labor Day here in Victoria so its a long weekend for us:-))

It is our first grandchild Carole. My daughter is having her twenty week scan this morning,so should know the sex then.

Most of the expensive items for our children were bought second hand, but although my daughter is level headed, her fiancée likes all things shiny, new and expensive.

Being retired,we always have long weekends lol.

Carolee

Carolee Report 5 Mar 2010 10:13

That's very exciting, Linda. I was like that with my first, I wanted the best of everything. I never wanted to know the sex at my scans, the best feeling is when they say, "Its a girl/boy" We both cried every time:-))

Obviously I had mine a long long time ago. I wasn't offered the sex with the first, but they did ask if I wanted to know with thee second, but I said no. Like you, I preferred to wait. It just seems normal to know these days.

It is exciting, but they live at the opposite end of the country,so I wish that they were nearer.

I must get my act together and be on my way. I am taking a friend out for lunch as long as she is up to it. Sometimes she is too ill,so we just stay at her home and have a strange Oromorph fuelled conversation.

I had better stress that it is not me slurping the Oromorph, I wouldn't be driving if it was.
