Sue,
I was born in Glamorgan - all the best people are you know :))).

OHs Williams were all North Wales carpenters and wheelwrights.

Does anyone else have trouble getting some family members to believe your research?

Berona Report 19 Mar 2010 23:09

I don't spend enough time on my treadmill, Linda. I don't have the energy to keep going for long. It's a 'vicious circle'. However, I know that Tec is too much of a gentleman to mean anything but what is complimentary.

Are you still getting locked out? It isn't me doing it. I'm having no trouble. I usually check for any messages with Friends when I am coming on here, but the response time is so slow, I sometimes get caught up (and frustrated), it puts me in a bad mood - waiting for pages to change!
Their techos could learn from the GR techos. Even though GR gets criticism, they do well to make their changes whilst the site is still operating 24/7.

No one else is researching in my family Sue, they are all just waiting for me to hand them the results.

Sue, I have absolutely no idea why, but I find it hard to imagine you as a pom!

Totaly irrational on my part

Berona Report 19 Mar 2010 23:13

Yes, Sue. I'm sure that if my Mum was here to-day, she would be thrilled if I could set her right on many things. However, she did no research and all of her knowledge was handed down. She, in turn, handed it down to us and I have found some of it to be semi-truth, whilst much of it is just plain bunkum! However, my brother is firm in his belief that what Mum told him is right and my research is wrong! Needless, to say, I learned long ago, not to mention the subject.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 19 Mar 2010 23:13

That is why Sue allows we poms on her thread.

The site seems to have cleared now Berona, just in time for me to go to bed, usually my computer just zips from page to page, but tonight it has been taking ages to load GR

SueMaid Report 19 Mar 2010 23:18

Allan - I was born in Bramley just outside of Leeds. We lived with my paternal grandfather until we came out to Australia when I was 3. So I guess I'm more Aussie than Pom but I feel my English heritage and it pulls me "home" every now and then. It's pulling now:-))

Linda - that's the kind of trouble I have with Friends. It takes ages to change pages and often gives me the wrong one. Drop down menus get in the way of what I am trying to read and won't go away.
I don't have this with GR, except that when I select Chat from the drop-down menu on Community - it doesn't always work and I have to revert to the old way on the left hand side of the screen. Hopefully, they are still working on it.

Allan Report 19 Mar 2010 23:25

Sue, we haven't been back since arriving here in 1982, and until recently we have had no inclination to go back.

I think that we would be disappointed at the way things are now.

One of the places we googled on the street maps was a house that we lived in near Langley just outside Macclesfield in Cheshire. The house is still the same but the village has changed. many cars parked around the place and the main road through the village looks extremely narrow!

Berona Report 19 Mar 2010 23:25

Sue - my grandfather was always the "English gentleman" and his sisters were "English ladies" - never forgot their beginnings! Grandfather was 2; his older sister 3 and his younger sister 6weeks when they came out here!
I think their mother must have instilled their heritage into them! Sounds like she was a very proud lady.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 19 Mar 2010 23:26

Sue,
There is a belief handed down through my fathers family that they were descended from Russian Jews.
I have researched that family back to late 18th century, and can find no evidence of this. The earliest ones were baptised, married, buried, according to Cof E customs.
I have a brother who will not accept this, despite my research proving the facts. There were Biblical names common in that family around 1800.
Names common in English Jewry, Israel, Emanuel, Hezekiah to name a few, but these names were also common across the board in those times. So if there is any link to Russian Jewish immigrants, it has to be prior to 1750.
I should add that my brother has never had anything to do with genealogy, but knows everything about it.

Allan - if you do have a trip back, don't expect to be too excited about seeing your old 'haunts'.

My OH went back whilst on a business trip, and saw the home he grew up in. The house had been allowed to deteriorate and there was no trace of the lovely rose garden his father had been so proud of. When I went to visit his sisters with him a few years later, he wouldn't take me to see it because he was ashamed of it.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 19 Mar 2010 23:36

Tec - my brother in law is like that. Absolutely insistent on certain "facts" that were told to him. He just won't believe the facts. He has told me over and over that his and OH's mother was born in Wales. When I finally showed him her birth certificate he insisted that his grandfather was Welsh. Still won't believe me although I have proof that none of them are Welsh.

Must go. Our little dog needs to see the vet.

Berona,

I wouldnt't visit any of my early haunts: the first, in Rusholme, Manchester, is on the edge of Moss Side. I lived there until I was 12 and even then Moss Side had a very poor reputation. It is now infamous for all the Drug activity and associated gangs.

The two house I lived in after that have both been demolished. One as part of a market development, the other for a carpark!

Hi everyone

I see I still don't have my name at the top of the page. With me being semi-useless whilst he has been working we did a joint house work effort this morning and will go and do the shopping. Trouble is one part of my shopping is at one end of the mall and the rest way down the other end - so he may have to move the vehicle... they don't allow us to skateboard in the shopping centre.

Glad to hear you wee bloke is on the mend and your house has undergone a spit and polish Sue - hope the wee dog is okay?

Waves to the rest ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enjoy your sautéed flannel Allan - probably be decidedly fishy bit like codswallop.
Cats are very resilient and do have a habit of boiiiiinnnggg~ingback.

From she who will remain nameless. Off to look at CC's video clip.

Hello all,

Ive been having trouble with this site, I'm not able to use the reply button. I was originally using the Au site, but saw a post on general saying to use the UK site. As you can see I'm here:-))))

Linda, thanks again for the hints on Legacy. I'm going to have a play with it later, I was tinkering around with it until late last night. I really like the look of it, I'm sure once I work out where everything is, I will enjoy it.

Its another beautiful day down here. Next week we have been forecast with lots of showery days, so I'm going to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
Ive got some succulents and a couple of trees to re-pot, so am going to do that later when it cools down a bit.
