Linda, I have never become used to the Aussie term backyard.

My housing terms are all from the UK :0))

I should imagine "back yard" is an American term. Oh and we don't really have a guard kangaroo:-)) We do have wallabies in the bush at the back of us and some fox which is really annoying. We have a small stream down the hill from us and it has a few turtles. It was a battle to stop the children - when they were little - bringing one home. We also have echidnas although they're shy and you don't see them often.

Ahh, the Great Aussie Outback

No matter how remote a place is, the Outback is always 100kms further down the track!

Good evening/morning all.
Our 'back yard' refers to whatever is fenced, regardless of how small or large it is. Once it is more than a quarter acre, it is referred to more as 'property'.
The term 'back garden' is used also, and although it can refer to all, it usually brings the vision of a carefully tended area.

People can have a young kangaroo as a pet and sometimes do when they have rescued them, but at a certain age, they must be released back into their naturalenvironment.

It is noticeable that now spring is here it is lighter much earlier and the dawn chorus is in full song at some ungodly hour. We are surrounded by large old trees and there are a large number of wood pigeons which make an awful racket

Hello Berona, you came in quietly there

Allan

Allan Report 26 Mar 2010 21:42

Good morning Berona

Linda, don't exaggerate! How much noise can a pigeon made of wood make :0))

No Allan a Wood Pigeon, not a wooden pigeon

Greetings Everyone,

All I can hear is sheep - thousands of sheep!

Hi Linda - yes, I came in quietly. I went to Friends first and came in via the top of the page - checking as I went to find that my name is on the Home page AND on every page as well! If I come in via my Favourites, I revert back to 'forename' again and no name on subsequest pages.
Maybe I should update the path in my Favourites.

Another hot one coming up. Still hotter than it should be for Autumn - and still no rain.

Hello, Berona and Tec. Sheep are very nice in their place - a roasting tin with rosemary and served with new potatoes and mint sauce:-)

Have the sheep done away with all the birds Tec?

Hi Sue,

Yes I'm inclined to agree with you - Roast lamb, mint sauce.

But the lambs are very cute at the moment.

Tec.

Good evening Tec

All that noise is enough to drive you baaaaaaaaaamy!

We have a large racecourse not far from us and nearby is a large complex with stables. It's lovely to drive past the fields and see the new foals.

Hi Allan,

The worse noise is later when they separate the lambs from the mothers.
My daughter was here at one time when that happened - she became quite emotional - there were tears. Would never have made a farmers wife.

I agree with you Sue - add some garlic to the rosemany and I'll join you!

I probably wouldn't be able to eat lamb if I could see them.
We used to eat rabbit - and I loved it - either baked or stewed. My son liked it too, until he went to work in a new industrial area, where they could see the wild rabbits while they sat outside to eat their lunch. He went right off eating them after that and since my grandchildren had a beautiful rabbit as a pet, I haven't eaten rabbit either!

Tec, it's amazing what you can become hardened to. At various times in my career I've had to work in abattoirs!

You just have to switch off and get on with the job!

My sister raised a small flock of sheep. They would take one to the abattoir, then bring it back and put it in the freezer. It always seemed odd to be eating a meal with a named sheep in it
