Good morning/ evening all.

Pat, OH and myself also had a lazy Good Friday, but mainly in remembrance of OH's mother, who like most Ukrainians was a very faithful member of the Church. For her the very thought of doing anything on Good Friday, other than prepare meals, went against her religious beliefs.

Another Ukrainian Tradition was to take a basket of home prepared food to Church on Easter Day to be blessed by the Priest. One of the items was a sweet bread called 'Paska'. Later on this morning I will attempt to make Paska bread. It will be made by hand, not in the machine.

Tec, we are waiting for the bare-root roses to appear in the garden section of one of the larger speciality shops so that we can extend the rose bed.

Sue, I know that you will enjoy the baby sitting :0))

CC i take it that you found the Eggs that were the subject of one of your earlier Threads?

If I can' t get back on for whatever reason for the next few days I wish you all a safe and happy Easter

Hello all. Hope you are all having a happy Easter. I'm having a lazy one. Late out of bed again.

Son's family have a new laptop and webcam - so I spent last evening helping them to get connected. Finally got it going and 3 y.o. grandson and I had a lovely conversation - only he kept trying to climb into the screen to get to me!

Allan - be careful what you say about Miles on the H&A thread. Apparently, he has been known to shout at wheelie bins!

Good Morning Allan,

Hope you are in top form this morning.

I find the various customs and traditions of Eastern Europe very interesting. I have a friend who is married to a Polish girl. He went to visit her family in a rural are of Poland at Christmas.
He was surprised to find the bath in the house contained several large trout like fish swimming around in the bath.
Apparently,it is a custom to eat fish on Christmas Eve, but it has to be freshly caught, as in very freshly caught, and eaten immediately after.

The following day the fish were eaten, the bath emptied, and my friend was able to take a bath - having travelled from England to Poland by car, he was very anxious to take a bath.

I hope the Paska bread turns out well, and is edible.

The bare root roses are much cheaper to buy than potted ones. When I say cheaper, they still cost an average of £10 per plant. About half the price of potted ones.

Good morning, Berona and good evening Linda

Berona, I've been known to shout at wheelie bins myself when they misbehave....but I have to be Miles from home :0))

Tec, although not particularly religous I do like the ceremonies of the Eastern Churches. The Ukrainian Catholic Church is affiliated to the Roman Catholic Church but the services follow the Orthodox tradition, even down to celebrating Christmas at the beginning of January.

I enjoy the liturgical music and choirs asociated with them.

I used to enjoy going to OH's house at Christmas and Easter when were courting.

Hi Linda,
Hope you're having fun with your daughter visiting - I think mine will be coming on Sunday.
Thank you for your offer of help, I will send the details to you.

Good Morning Berona,
Very funny that your grandson tries to reach you through the screen, little ones are so funny - by the time he is our age he will think our computers and laptops very crude and antiquaited - I would love to pop back in 50 years to see technological advancements.

Hi Tec - I can read what you say about roses, with a clear conscience now. Our roses seem to have a growth-spurt in the hot months, and since my leg trouble in late December, I sadly neglected the garden and my roses shot up almost to roof level of my villa. They were never watered either, so how they survived is beyond me, and the flowers were lovely! However, I cut them back last week and we had one day of light rain. Despite being ill-treated, they are flourishing, so I've been lucky.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 2 Apr 2010 23:43

Hi Berona,
Glad your roses are thriving despite everything - they are quite tough once established, and the more severe you are in pruning the better they seem to do - we have roses in this garden that were here when we came. An elderly neighbour, now dead, remembers them here over 40 years ago.
They really appreciate a dose of rose food in the Spring as I expect you know.

Allan,
My grand daughter was in St. Petersburgh last Easter on a school trip. They went to the Easter Service at the huge Russian Orthodox Cathedral. The whole thing was by candlelight. She said it was the most moving experience she had ever had.

Tec, Russia is the one Country that I would really love to visit.

I've never had any desire to go to the States: whilst I find Americans, individually, are very nice people, as a Nation they seem extremely arrogant.

Tecwyn Report 2 Apr 2010 23:57

I would also like to go to Russia Allan - to see the magnificent 19th century architecture, churches, palaces of the Czars etc.
I have been to America a few times. The only place I found interesting was the older parts of San Francisco.
Having dealt with many Americans, I found them pleasant enough, but very demanding. I find American gung-ho foriegn policy hard to swallow.

Like you, Allan, I find the American people individually, very nice but I'm surprised at how little they know about other parts of the world, unless they are affected by them.

Those who visit here, are amazed that we are so advanced. I know that from the photos, they are aware of our bridge and our opera house - but they must think that once you walk away from them, you find kangaroos bounding along dirt tracks. They have no idea of how big our cities are, or that we actually invent and manufacture things here. They think everything was invented by Americans and that everything we have was brought out from America.

Allan

Allan Report 3 Apr 2010 00:53

Berona, I must admit that apart from having a few American penfriends when I was younger, most of the ones I have met have either been visitors here, or permanent residents.

Colleagues who have been to the States have always come back amazed at how wasteful Americans are, particularly with food!

That's right. I ordered 'ham & egg' for breakfast and received one massive slab of thick ham which filled the plate - must have been 4 or 5 hundred grams in it - with two fried eggs on top and two thick sausages and two large tomato halves on top of that again. It was hard to know which part of the plate to attack first. I like ham and eggs, but had to leave more than I could eat!

Then, in Vegas - where the casinos have no windows and no clocks and serve all meals 24/7 - so that if you feel it is morning, you can order breakfast or if you feel it might be evening, etc. etc., they do anything to keep the customers there so that they can eat as much as they like and return to the gambling rooms - again there is not only lots of the food - but it's also very cheap in those places.

Good Morning/Evening Everyone,

Where have you all gone too?
Wherever you are, I hope you're all having a Happy Easter. It has been a lovely day here in Welsh Wales, and the forecast is good for Sunday and Monday.

I used to "talk" to someone on the internet who lived in Washington State USA. He asked some strange questions -
"What part of England is Wales in?"
" Do you run into the Queen very often?" ON THAT SMALL ISLAND!!
"Does the Queen shop at Wal-Mart?"

I got the impression he thought the UK was stuck somewhere in the 1920/30s - and we were generally backward.
