Yes, we've used trial and error many times:-)) Sometimes it's amazing what you can grow in areas where the plant shouldn't really survive. One of my mistakes was buying a couple of rose bushes in a nursery out west. They had virtually no resistance to black spot and it took me awhile to realise they just weren't going to do well. I have a wall basket on the front verandah and nothing survives there for long. It's very annoying but it's in full sun for a good part of the day. I've tried geraniums, petunias and other sun loving plants but nothing lasts. I think I'll put some cactus in next:-))

What a lovely sound of a Welsh baritone as I enter the thread - that means you Tec!

Your day sounds lovely Sue, i am glad that you enjoyed yourself.

Good evening Allan, does your talk of the Shire mean that you look like a Hobbit?

Allan

Allan Report 2 May 2010 22:41

Good evening, Linda

I enjoyed reading Tolkien: very hobbit forming :0))

And no I don't have hairy feet nor do I live in a hole in the ground.

Sue I have a cycad that I grew from seed and no matter where I put it, it thrives. The thing is now 24 years old!

Just after i posted my internet went down, I have just got it back.

I have been incredibly busy today Tec, keeping busy really, but we didn't go to the allotment, although it has been a nice day here.

I think OH had thoughts of reading the Sunday papers this morning, but I had other ideas. I wanted to catch up on some of the outstanding jobs. The largest one was oiling the kitchen worktops. We had oak worktops put in when we did the kitchen and they have to be oiled occasionally. The problem is that the oil the kitchen fitters gave us is very thick and gloopy. Despite rubbing down with white spirit before applying a new coat, it has built up. So we sanded the whole thing back with fine wire wool and white spirit. It was hard work, but worth it as we got most of the old oil off. I then re oiled them with some new stuff which is much thinner

Then I dusted and polished the whole house, then shredded lots of papers from mums house which are not needed any more.

I did relax this evening and watched lewis on TV though

Wow Linda - that does sound like hard work. Always very satisfying when the job is done. We decided to tidy our front verandah and give the decking a good sweep and wash and give the furniture a good scrubbing. It was a messy and tiring job especially but it looked so good it was worth it.

Hello, CC:-)) Years ago before we bought this house we rented a house that had a very nice garden. It had a lovely busy lizzie so when we bought this house I took some cuttings. After 33 years I still have a descendant of that plant. One plant I don't seem to have any success with are fuchias. They flourish for a short while then perish - I can't figure out why. It's a shame because I love them.

Blake's seven, now that brings back memories.

Linda, untidy it may have been, but I knew precisely which heap everything was in!

Hello CC,When we moved here, the garden was very basic. it had a rectangular lawn in the back with borders all of a foot wide down the side.

We cut far larger irregular shaped borders and planted it all up. We managed to finds some lawn edging which looks like bricks on edge, so that OH could mow onto it. He has just been out this afternoon moving some of it and making the border wider in a couple of places because the edge of the lawn was always in shade and the grass was mossy. He has the edging in its new position, but has it to concrete in place tomorrow

Hello CC, Glad you enjoyed the Joyce Grenfell thing, I am a big fan of hers too.
Linda I expect your worktop looks lovely now and well worth the effort.

Well folks - my brain appears to have gone to bed without me - I am sitting gazing at this screen like a zombie - so time to follow my brain I think. Will talk to you all tomorrow.

Thinking of you Berona - hope you had a good night.

Enjoy your day Down Under,
Sleep well Linda and CC.
