Hello all, My name is Pam and I live in Far North Qld. 14klms up the Barron River from Kuranda, north west of Cairns. I'm not sure if this is the way to get into this site but thought I'd give it a try.

I've been a member of Genes for some years now but don't usually have time to look at all the 'goodies' available (of which this site is one) but can't sleep this morning and stumbled upon you good folk. I haven't read all 1197 pages but have read quite a few and think I would like to be part of your site, if you'll have me.

I have several platypus in the back creek on my property. When I first bought here in 2001 I was thrilled to see 2 platypus and they've obviously multiplied over that period of time. 7 at last count. Does anyone know how often they breed?

Pam.

Thank you CC for your generous welcome. I think I might just stick with this site for the time being. I've read back over quite a few of the posts and all of you people seem to be really nice.

Some time ago I used to belong to a Canadian chat room and got to know quite a few of the people well. Indeed, I went over to Toronto, Canada for one of their get togethers and met many in person which was wonderful.

Unfortunately, we ended up with a very nasty person coming on to the site and it folded. Several attempts have been made to start up new sites or join other existing sites but it isn't the same as the original. Pity, that. But I am still in touch with several people by email, which is nice.

My goodness, isn't it amazing? Who would have thought when I was a child that one day we would be sitting here communicating like this? Telephone was the most immediate tool we had then. I'm sure my grandmother would be horrified. After all, she told me that man would never land on the moon. God wouldn't allow it!!!! lol

CC I don't know what time it is where you are ---- or where you are?? But it's 2.50am here and I'm starting to look to go back to bed. I'll be checking in here again tomorrow at various times so that I can work out when the best time to come in is.

But thanks a lot for talking to me. Hoo roo.

Welcome to the thread Pam, I too am a pom. I am not a expert at all, but i do have lots of subscriptions to sites and enjoy helping people, although as Cc will testify, i can't always find them.

Cc your garden is lovely, mine is predominately green and not at all manicured.

It is annoying when you lose plants. i have a large palm in a pot on the patio. OH normally takes it in for the winter, but it is very heavy,so he decided that it would be fine. it is well and truly dead, which is annoying as I had tended it since it was tiny.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 10 May 2010 19:53

I have a very large cordeline which is normally fine, but it looks a bit sickly this year. It isn't dead, but it doesn't look very happy. I need to buy a few new things to fill in the extra bits of garden created when OH has altered the lawn edging. I will wait until we come back from holiday to buy things

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 10 May 2010 20:08

It would be bald if I did that

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 10 May 2010 20:13

I have just realised that you mean a cordyline tree, but I mean the plant type, I was wondering how you stand under it. It was the snow which did it. I planted one in mums garden and that is totally dead, ours is a very large old plant,so is just sick

I cringe when OH says he is going to prune something because he hacks the poor thing to death

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 10 May 2010 20:42

The next door neighbour just came to collect their keys which we have had while they were on holiday last week,

Trying to stop OH from pruning all the flowering wood off the fruit trees is a hopeless task, it is all too complicated for him

Good Evening Linda,
GoodEvening CC,

Welcome to the thread Pam, always nice to "see" a new face. I'm known as Tec, and I'm also a Pom, a Welsh one, living on the coast of West Wales. We are a happy bunch, a little crazy at times, but also have been known to have serious discussions. The time difference is a little problematic, but we seem to overlap sufficiently to chat daily to each other.

I have a large cordyline tree in my front garden, I planted it ten years ago, and it's now 10 ft tall, with two trunks - looks quite exotic. Sometimes known as the Cabbage Palm, or Torquay Palm.
My rhodedendrons, and azaleas look fantastic at the moment. I have a large dark pink rhodedendron, and a white one. The azaleas are pink, white, red, and yellow.
The new roses I planted in early April are all shooting new growth now.
The other shrubs I've got are hydrangers, snow ball tree (viburnum) orange blossom (philadelphus) honeysuckle, wisteria, magnolia, and a variety of peonies, including a tree peony.
We don't have a good garden centre anywhere near, which is just as well, as I spend far too much money in them. A bit like a chocoholic being let loose in Thorntons.

Tec.

Good evening Tec, err I have lots of plants in my garden, but haven't got a clue what lots of them are.I hope the tree peony I planted yesterday survives. It is some old Victorian variety which has grown at the castle since well Victorian times. They didn't know the name.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 10 May 2010 21:45

Hi Linda,
The tree peony sounds good, do you know what colour it is? If you bring a bucketful of manure home from the allotment and mulch around the peony it will do it really good, and boost new growth.
I've got a set of RHS garden books, so can identify anything.
I'm going to get a water pump so that I can have a solar powered water feature. I love the sound of running water in the garden. We had a lovely one at our last house.

The peony had dark red flowers tec, which apparently are not too big. The ones in the castle garde were just starting to open and the flowers smelt lovely, even though they were still in bud.

I will go and check my email now CC

Hi CC.
I think I've mentioned here before that I can make a bar of chocolate last months. The Easter egg my daughter brought me is still waiting to be eaten. There is also a box of Terry's All Gold been sitting there ages, I'm sure it must be out of date.

Chocolate anyone?

Tec.

Yes please Tec.
CC unless you want to give me your password, that won't work lol

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 10 May 2010 22:04

The tree peony sounds lovely Linda, I hope it thrives for you.

CC. I've always been one of those annoying people who could eat vast amounts of chocolate, or anything else, and never put on an ounce in weight.
