Yes Linda, it is Lindisfarne I was trying to think of - again I have only seen it on tv.

Pam - I think you are 10 hours ahead of us in the UK. when your post came on the thread it was 10 pm here. Linda and I were "talking" live at that time.
I am in Wales on the North West coast..

Allan in WA is usually the first to post from OZ at about this time.

Sorry Linda, I went to make a sandwich.

Good whatever to one and all.

Good morning Pam, I'm in Western Australia about 2 hrs south of Perth in a townsite called Australind. I'm originally from the UK but have been out here since 1982.

Good evening Linda and Tec,

Linda I once worked in Scarborough (well it was only for three months) back in 1974. In those days, which you are far too young to remember, it was a really nice place.

Tec, Whitby has always had special memories for me. In my final year at primary school we had a school camp at Staithes. Two of us got permissin to go to Whitby by ourselves and we spent a very happy day there. It wouldn't be allowed today.

Good evening CC

No storms (yet) but some nice rain overnight and this morning. I almost feel rehydrated.

The Thuckitan Sea would make a good area for terry Pratchett to write about!

Good evening CC, good morning Allan.

I am not going until Sunday CC, we are off to Crete to our favourite hotel, we usually go there every May. So you will have two weeks to get up when you want and have your breakfast at 11am without me tutting at you

Allan

Allan Report 12 May 2010 23:03

Linda. I've never been to Crete. I believe that it is a magical country.

I once spent two weeks in Cyprus, fully paid for by the UK government, when I was in the Army Reserve!

I should imagine that the two countries are very similar.

Now I'm in trouble with Linda because I left her high & dry while I went to make sandwich........

Good Morning Allan, No you didn't let me down, arrived on cue as expected.

CC. It's very strange, I spent years wandering around the world, but have seen so little of the UK. Living in Essex until I was 16 yrs, I got to know my way around London very well. A trip to Southend was an adventure, and I did go to Margate once. Went to Dorset twice, and down to Cornwall a few times. In the North I've been to Southport, Liverpool, and Lancaster. I did go to Leeds one day to Yorkshire TV studios.
I do know Wales very well.

They are similar Allan, although I think our accommodation may well be just a tad better than yours was. Crete has a fascinating history and some excellent archaeological sites. It is a very large island though,so we have only been to a relatively small part of it.
We have only stayed in three different places, but really love one hotel, this will be the fifth time we have been there. it is in a spectacular setting and as it has no kids club, you only get the odd little toddler there. The evening entertainment consists of a strange looking man tinkling the ivories in the bar area so any one who like "turns" would not go there. It is very quiet and laid back and has a high percentage of repeat guests.

If you had a water meter as we have Cc, you wouldn't be hosing anything down,so think of the work it would save you

I am off to bed now, don't stay up late Tec.

Have a nice day Allan CC you are a law unto yourself, so I wouldn't presume to tell you when to go to bed

Allan

Allan Report 12 May 2010 23:16

Ohh CC using a hose to wash down areas like paths and patios is a big no no over here with the water restrictions.

Mind you as the inspectors only work from 9 to 5 you can usually get away with it in the dark or if you hve good neighbours who wont dob you in :0))

My next door neighbour works in the Building Dept of our local Council. I was talking to her about the need to submit plans for a gazebo. Yes we had to! Cost of processing plans and issue of a building permit $200.00 Cost of gazebo $450.00

We put the thing up anyway, without approval. So far no visit from Council :0))

CC, buy a cat! That may reduce the bird problem!!

Tec, I knew Lancaster very well as my Aunt was in Lancaster Moor Hospital for all of her adult life, and, I suspect all of her teen years as well!

We (my mother and I ) used to go up once a month. When I was a child it was exciting because we would go up there on the train in the days of the steam trains. We went from Manchester Victoria statin and in those days Railway Stations always seemed so vibrant. Noisy, smelly and heaps of people milling about,

CC. I know the areas you mention in North Wales very well, but haven't been up there for a long time. I quite like Llandudno area. We are down on the West coast which is a lot less commercial. Our village is between the towns most people head for, so mainly just pass through. There is no vehicular access to our beach, and most people don't realise there is one, consequently it's mostly deserted even in peak season except for a few locals. The other area of Wales I like is Pembrokeshire, the coast there is beautiful.

Allan my daughter was up at Lancaster doing a four year degree course, so we used to travel up once a month to take her a food parcel, her friends got to know this and would descend on us, and the food like a lot of vultures.
I know what you mean about the steam trains. When I was 13 my family moved 30 miles from my school. It was arranged for me to stay at the school, but meant I had to travel every day for three years by steam train. Sometimes I fell asleep, and would wake up at the end of the line in Fenchurch Street in London, miles beyond my school stop, which meant by the time I caught a train back I would be very late for school.

CC I know the type of neighbour!

Although no directly next to us, there is a house directly over the road that fronts on to another street.

the house is rented by a youngish guy but unfortunately his mother is the landlord. It would be no exaggeration to say that the guy must spend about 18 hrs per day fixing up cars. He is constantly reving them at top revs and then "test drives" them down our street which is long and straight. We are just waiting for the inevitable as there ar quite a few young families in the area.

It has become common place to see the police or council officials mooching round, but no one seems able to stop him.

I feel sorry for his direct neighbours!

I should add I loved the noise, the smell, and everything to do with steam train. The run a steam train along the coast here in July and August, hoards of people gather to take photo's as it passes through the village.

Those were the days CC! :0))

I even remember when carriages without corridors (and therefore no toilets!) were sometimes used
