I've been to Manchester lots of times. When we lived not far from Chester, but over the Welsh border, my OH liked to shop in Manchester - at the Arndale Centre - this was damaged by an IRA bomb, in the 80s I think.

just popping in, OH has had the computer for most of the evening, doing his tax return.

We re all ready, but it looks like we may not be going anywhere because the ash is back

Allan Report 15 May 2010 23:14

Tec, I've never seen the Arndale Centre in Manchester. After I married in 1970 we went to live in Bollington so Stockport was our nearest major centre: then in 1975 we moved over to Cleethorpes and never went back to Manchester.

Good evening Linda.

I do hope that your flight is not cancelled. What makes this eruption any more 'dangerous' than others that have taken place?

When you think of all the sandstorms/duststorms/ eruptions that occur annually that have not caused planes to be grounded, why this one?

I don't know Allan, it is just the wind direction which has changed now and brought it over England again. They are expecting the southern airports to be closed tomorrow, but the map I have just seen on the news shows it over the north as well

Good Evening Linda,
Wondered where you were, have just PMd you. I think you may be lucky and just get away in time - I hope so anyway..

Allan, The Arndale Centre was great for shopping, probably the best in the North West of England. Haven't been for many years now, but I believe the new centre is much better and covers a huge area.

CC, Didn't realise it was as recent as 1996 - I get my dates muddled these days.

Hello Tec,I have emailed you back. I hope we do get away, I don't care about coming back as long as we get there

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 15 May 2010 23:35

Linda, As you say, so long as you get there it doesn't matter about getting back on time. Though, it would be dreadful to be marrooned on Crete for a month, how awful LOL.
I'm sure you'll be ok, I'll keep everything crossed.

I must also away to my bed,

Berona, I hope you had a good night, and feel better again today. I won't say "Perkier" as you told me that means something different in Oz, but you know what I mean.

Enjoy your day Allan, and Pam.

Goodnight,

Ahhh CC Your comments about Frank Sinatra bring back some memories. You know, I never liked him at all until he came out to Australia to perform at the Grand Opening of Sanctuary Cove (a golf resort complex here in Queensland). You know, that man was 74 years old at the time and he had an orchestral backing and there was no b......t in his performance. He casually walked on stage, all dressed beautifully in a tux, picked up the microphone and sang. No big intro, none of this "And now............Mr Frank Sinaaaatraaaa" stuff.

Unlike Whitney Houston who was on before him. She was the ultimate diva. There was a huge number of people walked out on her performance many of them young children who were hooked on a couple of her recordings, the names of which escape me at this senior moment. But she strutted up and down the stage saying hos much she loooved Australia (had only arrived the day before and never been here before) etc. etc. Yuk!!!

But that was some concert really. There was Mental as Anything; Peter Allen; Julie Anthony; and of course, Whitney Houston and Frank Sinatra. And he knocked them dead.

As for Queen. Wow, I always liked Bohemian Rhapsody but hadn't really liked any of their other songs. One day a workmate asked me if I'd like to go to their concert in Sydney and I went. Well, Hooked I was!! What a blowout of a concert. I couldn't hear properly for days but it was outstanding. There was no time at all that someone wasn't performing on the stage during the whole concert. And Freddie Mercury !!! What a performer. Just wonderful.

Enough of this drivel. Pam.

Good morning all. Well so far so good. The ash seems to be holding off and the holiday company website was updated this morning to say check in as normal. We don't fly until late afternoon though,so I need everyone to keep everything crossed until then

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 12:12

Oh Dear - According to the Mid day news bulletin it doesn't look good for you Linda, how frustrating and rotten luck. Seems the Ash Cloud is affecting the whole of the North of England.

I did have everything crossed, including my eyes.

PatriciaAnn Report 16 May 2010 12:15

I don't understand about this ash cloud thing. How come it's still hanging around?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 12:21

Good Morning Pat,
It's because the volcano in Iceland is still pumping out ash, and it all depends on wind direction - if it comes our way, then we are affected.

Tec.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 May 2010 19:24

Well that was the shortest holiday ever. Drove to the airport, sat there for five hours and then came home again, all thanks to the volcanic ash. There is no information on when we might get away, it could be another couple of days
