Good Evening CC,
or Noswaith Dda if you like,

I will be very surprised if Linda got away on time if at all, but haven't seen latest bulletin, so maybe things have improved.

I never liked Whitney Houston. I like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald,
loved Eartha Kitt, and a big fan of Lena Horne, who died last week, aged 92. I loved her "New Fangled Tango"
"You just sort of stand there, and just sort of do it" - hilarious.
Was it Billie Eckstien and Sarah Vaughan who sang "We seem like perfect strangers now" ? I liked that.

I must admit to being a huge Queen fan, and play their CDs regularly. When I pop my clogs I told my daughter that I want "And Another One Bites the Dust" at my funeral, but she thinks that would be frowned upon by my stuffy relatives.

It was a beautiful day here, and I got a lot of odd jobs done in the garden, including crawling on my hands and knees between my shrubs and the hedge between my garden and my neighbour. Her garden is a wilderness and overgrown with all kinds of things, including Ivy, that was spreading into my garden, so I've dealt with that on my side. My neighbour is in her eighties, and can't be expected to keep on top of her garden. I would willingly do it for her, but she is "difficult" and erratic, so I'd rather not get involved. I do little jobs for her, but have to be careful, as she can be quite nasty if the mood takes her.

Oh Linda, I'm so sorry, you must be so disappointed - what rotten luck. How will you know when it's ok to go? do they contact you?

I expect you ran your fridge down too, so a dash for milk etc etc.

I'm furious for you...........Grrr.

Hi everyone,
I was sorry to hear about your holiday Linda.
Thanks for the info about volcano Tec. Strangley enough my boss is going to Iceland in July.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 May 2010 20:36

We just had a take away as I couldn't be bothered to cook.
We just have to keep looking on the holiday company website until we are told to check in again

I checked before we left this morning and it said to check in as normal. I also checked the Doncaster airport site and it said every thing was fine, that was a lie as no planes have flown from there all day.

When we got there, it said that we were going to fly from Birmingham at 8pm and we just had to wait until they organised coaches. There was another flight to Egypt and they were going to be bused down to Luton and one to somewhere else who were told to go home about an hour after we got there.

There were hundreds of people just standing in the departure hall by the check in desks as there were no seats. I managed to perch on the end of one of the conveyor belts you put your suitcases on to get them weighed, at least that was better than sitting on the floor. It took them two hours to open a lounge for us to sit in.

Every hour they would announce that they had no further information on when they would get any coaches,so we just sat there. They did give us a £5 voucher for food, that would have been fine if there had not only been one tiny Costa coffee which immediately ran out of food.

Just as the coaches started to turn up, they announced that the ash had got to Birmingham and we all had to go home. We just have to watch the website to see when we have to go back again. Judging from the news, that could be a couple of days.

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 20:59

Sounds like total chaos to me Linda - What I don't understand is that once a region is affected by the ash, they must know that nothing is going to change that day, so why keep hundreds of people hanging about needlessly. The other thing is that they know the direction of the ash cloud, and the speed it travels at, so why plan to divert you to another airport further south when there is little point.
There is nothing can be done about the ash cloud, and it's no ones fault, but you would think the airlines would have got their act together by now.
Anyway, I'm sorry you've had such a disappointing start to your holiday, and hope you can get away very soon.

Thank you Tec., the worst thing is that my back is aching, sitting on a conveyor belt for two hours is not that comfortable

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 21:16

It could be worse Linda - someone might have started the luggage conveyor - you could have been shot down a shute into lost luggage, and turned up in Nairobi a week next Friday.

Hope your back recovers after a nights rest.

I have to take the wheelie bin up to the main road now - might find Allan lurking up there - who knows?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 21:49

No sign of Allan, but the wheelie bins were asking for news of him, they were not impressed that he fraternises with Aussie bins these days.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 May 2010 21:51

How far do you have to take the bins Tec?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 22:01

Not far Linda, about 500 yds,

green household one this week,
brown garden rubbish next week.

exciting life!

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 May 2010 22:05

That is still a long way. You should have a tow bar and attach it to it

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 22:09

That's a good idea Linda - or I could fix a little motor to it, and a remote control - and dress it up like a dalek - Allan would be green with envy.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 May 2010 22:13

Anything would be better than having to drag it all that way. How does your old lady neighbour manage?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 22:18

I take hers too - and bring it back of course, but she has never mentioned it - I think that she thinks the bin men come down for it.
Oh thinks I'm mad, but you can't expect her to do it, she is quite frail, though an occassional thankyou wouldn't go amiss.

You are a kind man Tec,
I am tired,so am off to bed now. I hope Allan and CC arrive soon to keep you company.

I will have to see what tomorrow brings, our flight is still delayed on the airlines website, but they put a news flash up a while back saying that a flight from Manchester was leaving at 00.12,so that airport must be open again

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 22:35

Goodnight Linda,
Sorry you've both had such a rotten day, hope for good news soon.
sleep well - at least you're in your own bed tonight.

Allan Report 16 May 2010 22:41

Good evening Linda and Tec

Linda I'm sorry to hear that your holiday plans have been spoilt by the Ash

My late arrival is not due to my being held hostage by the bins, but I've had problems with this site and also with my ISP site and have only just resolved them.

it's knowing where to thump the computer that turns you into an expert.

Well done the pommies for winning the 20/20 cricket series

Tecwyn Report 16 May 2010 22:52

Good Morning Allan,

I spoke to the Welsh bins about you this evening - they said that they knew of your reputation down under, and that mercifully you were a long way from here...........whatever do they mean I wonder?

There are laws against thumping computers - the cyber men will be sent to seek you out.

Yes, the Poms did well in the cricket, and Mark Webber the Aussie won the Monaco Grand Prix - well done to him, he also won the Spanish race last week - brilliant driver.

They say Heathrow and Gatwick will be shut tomorrow, so thousands more unhappy travellers.

Tec.

Allan

Allan Report 16 May 2010 22:59

Tec, I'll team up with Dr Who to take care of the Cyber Men. He can travel in his TARDIS and I'll take my wheelie bin.:0))

i know that the fights are grounded for safety reasons, but it does seem excessive.

it must be so frustrating, particularly for those people with jobs who find it difficult enough arranging overseas holidays without having to reschedule entirely!

I suppose that next year, flights cancelled or delayed due to volcainc eruptions will be on the list of exclusions for holiday insurance.
