Good Evening CC.

Today was a strange day here. It was overcast this morning, then the sun came out, and it was a beautiful afternoon. About 5 o'clock a heavy sea fog rolled in, the thickest I've seen in years. By 6 o'clock the traffic was going very slowly through the village, with headlights on.
These conditions usually precede a heatwave.

I don't do metric either. 10 centimeters means nothing to me. I object to having to buy 2.4 metres of timber, when I only want 6 foot. Petrol is currently £1-29p a litre here - is this to disguise the price per gallon at £5-81p? I do get funny looks at the deli counter when I ask for 6oz or 1/2lb of ham - but grams mean nothing to me. I could learn if I wanted, but I don't see why I should. I was raised to do things the British way. We were conned outragiously when the currency went metric.
Should we yet be instructed by our European masters to commence driving on the right hand side of the road, then I shall continue to drive on the left, and they can all take avoiding action - or not - I really dont care.

Of course you may ride pillion on my Penny Farthing CC. Just outside Wrexham in North Wales, there is a large country house, Erddig Hall, on the Erddig Estate. The Yorke family were resident there for centuries. The last Squire was Philip Yorke, somewhat eccentric, he rode his Penny Farthing around the town through the 1960s into the 70s until his death. The property now belongs to the National Trust.

Hello everyone - I hope you are all well. Tec you sound grumpy:-))

My computer is playing up and keeps dropping out for whatever reason. We have a computer person coming today to have a look so may be off-line all weekend. It's a nuisance as I have some work to do before the volunteer's course starts at the end of the month so hopefully it will be something easy and I can get on with the paperwork. If not then I'll have to go into the office which is a nuisance because of the lack of parking at the hospital.

Berona Report 20 May 2010 23:22

Good evening/morning all. Yes I'm on deck a little earlier than usual. That's because my opposite neighbour is moving out and the removalist arrived at 6:30 and parked outside my bedroom window!

Tec - I would love to ride pillion on your penny-farthing cycle, but can't remember seeing a pillion seat on them, although it's a long time since I last saw one.

CC 10c is 50F and 25c is just under 80F. Does that help? Here in Aust. We don’t have Fahrenheit anymore but my thermometer in the kitchen has both. No, not clever, just know where to look. Which is what my dear headmistress told me many moons ago. “My dear, you don’t need to know all the answers. Just have to know where to look.” Has stood me in good stead most of my life. Most valuable thing I learned at school.

But we went metric here years ago and I still think sometimes in Imperial measure and then translate to metric. I guess with use we get it all together. Petrol up here in Cairns has been around $1.28 per litre now for weeks. We don’t get the fluctuations in price that they do in, for instance, Sydney. I was horrified when down there earlier in the year at how often the price goes up and down. Sometimes by as much as 6c per litre. Amazing

6c a litre Pam? Try 18 a couple of weeks ago. Of course there is no collusion between petrol stations or between oil companies. Of course. C*****x was raided by the price regulator or ASIO or MI5 or someone a couple of years ago, but they couldn't find any evidence. Yeah, right.
We went to Cairns a few years ago and visited Kuranda a couple of times and drove through the tablelands. Lovely place in winter/dry season, not so sure about the wet.
Stinking humid weather with scattered cyclones ... or is that just Brisbane and its environs?
Berona, it does seem like you are getting better, even if slowly.
My shoulder seems to be getting better slowly too. Apparently it is not the arm, which is where it hurts, but the shoulder capsule is inflamed. I am learning not to overextend it. I can't take anti inflammatories as I have a history of high blood pressure and some chronic renal failure.
Once upon a time I was a computer ignoramus too. My then employer said that we would have to learn Lotus 1-2-3 because it would be good for us. The little I learned did help when I had to learn Excel spreadsheets later and now use them a lot for work.
They are useful not just for data and calculations, but some of the functions do count the number of entries with a particular word (my name) among a pile of others, so I can tell how much I have to do.
Re metrication and all that, we went to dismal currency when I was a teenager. Metrication came later. For some measurements like temperature I find I am almost bilingual. For others I can do a quick - and approximate - conversion. But for others I am as much in the dark as anyone else.
One area I have never worked out is land areas. Acres I can cope with, but perches? At school I learned that 5 1/2 yards make one rod, pole or perch and 4 of those make a chain. But this is a length? How does it relate to an area? Answers on a postcard, please.
Lunch time is definitely over and I have a bit of work to do so bye for now from semi-sunny Sydney.

Phew it is hot, well it is when you have been crawling around scrubbing carpets.
"Someone" walked up stairs with a cup of coffee, slopping it all the way up. Presumably the same "someone" who comes back from the allotment, has a shower and leaves all the dirt in the shower tray , then walks on the bedroom carpet with wet feet,so leaving dirty footprints.

I keep pointing out the error of his ways in leaving the shower tray dirty but he insists, he swills it out. Odd that, we must have a ghost gardener living here as well because it certainly isn't me.

Hello Linda. Glad to know you are warm, even if you did have to work to be like that.
Just the day that I get up early and joine the thread, no-one was here to greet me! Am I too late again?

Berona

Berona Report 21 May 2010 23:13

I'll be glad when we change the clocks again. We get to talk for longer. Best way now is for us to talk to you in our evenings - and your mornings - but not everyone is available at that time.

I see Allan is on another thread, he obviously doesn't care about us any more.

Thanks Linda, but don't stay up for me. I haven't chedked my messages yet, just came straight in here. Didn't even look to see if we had any Friday night spats going!
I hope all is well with Tec and the duchess. He is usually around - but might have decided on an early night.

I noticed that your trip was cancelled. I was so sorry to learn about that. What is the situation with it now?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 May 2010 23:22

Supposed to be hotter still tomorrow - I got all my hanging baskets planted up - and used the hose tonight for the first time.

The village lads are down on the beach tonight having a barbie.

We managed to rebook it for Tuesday, but we have to go from an airport further away. The hot weather here is due to stop on Monday when the wind will turn round and come from the north again, that could bring the ash back again,so we will have to see

OH is mad,so he was at the allotment in the heat putting a new fence up. I am more sensible so left it until early evening to go and hoe the weeds from between the onions
