Good evening CC

You mentioned Glenn Miller in your last post.

The only Miller record I ever had was Max Miller, but I don't remember what he sang now :0))

I know mum will be fine - she's travelled the world but never alone. Actually at 76 I thought she looked the youngest there:-))

I like a lot of the music out now. I love Pink and a number of bands. The upside of having a son still living at home. Of course he listens to our music too and has developed a taste for Bobby Darin, the Beatles etc.

There was a phone call involved Allan. I was just looking in for a few minutes before bedtime, when the phone rang

I had a lovely weekend, my daughter only has six weeks to go, so she was nice and fat. It was lovely to be able to feel my granddaughter to be moving about. My son and his girlfriend also came and stayed overnight,so the whole family was together, which was very nice.

I am sure that your mum will be fine Sue, she has managed a lifetime so far

CC Do you remember years ago when they banned subliminal advertising on TV and radio? Maybe this is what's happening with those heavy metal songs. There's a subliminal message in there like.......... search and destroy .......................... you must bash up some poor unsuspecting person and take their mobile and money today.................. It's the ones that are glorifiying rape that worry me. I wasn't sure I was hearing the songs right so I asked my grandson and he assured me I'd heard right but told me not to worry about it. He didn't believe the things they were saying. Which is all well and good. But what about the people who are emotionally challenged and do act it out.

Pam, there is a delay between postings and it can be frustrating if, like me, you are a slow typist.

By the time I have responded to one post another six appear and my response becomes somewhat redundant.

I suspect that most of the posters on here are not real people but are creatures like spiders and Octipusses as to type as fast as they do they must have at least eight hands :0))

I hope Tec is Ok s well Sue, although I haven't been around much, I noticed he hadn't posted.
I really am off to bed now. Before we went away on Friday morning,i took the house key to the next door neighbour, she took one look at me and asked if i was OK because I looked so tired. I hadn't felt bad until that point! I suppose my being "unwell" has taken it out of me.

So,Allan What are you up to today? I've just started the laundry. Have several pairs of very muddy jeans to wash now that the tractor is out of the creek. There was a local handyman on the property next door slashing the grass with a big 4WD tractor so OH went and spoke to him. He very nicely came over, rescued our tractor and did the rest of the dirt moving that needed to be done to finish the job.

Cost us, But only $180 and he was able to do it all in less than and hour where it would have taken up another 3 days just to finish the earthmoving.

So true, CC. And I think a lot of them head for the warmth of far north Queensland in the winter.

The violence in some song lyrics concerns me but what concerns me more are the songs that promote suicide as the only way out. Break ups with girlfriends, no jobs, the future of mankind - these themes can, in my opinion, depress a depressed soul even further. With suicide at epidemic proportions among young people it frightens me the messages sent. Having a son who has battled mild depression on and off over the years I dread to think what effect these songs could have on him. We have talked about it with him but is this enough?

Pamela,

I'll probably potter around the garden. There is a great deal of weeding required.

As folks on here are aware, we have been revamping the back garden and dug up the lawn. This has allowed us to grow more vegies and also to do proper crop rotation which we were unable to do previously.

Our block is a standard 800sq metre suburban block but because of the style of the house there is a fairly large backgarden.

As for the rest I'll be doing a lamb stew for tea. Most of it is already prepared, just the vegies to cook.

I must be off as I have a meeting to go to. Have a good day Aussies and a good evening to our up-top friends.

CC - I have read about the young suicides in Wales. Terribly sad. Our son knows we are always there for him but I well remember him telling me he felt hopeless. That frightened me and it was what prompted us to get him to the doctor. That was a number of years ago but since then he hasn't been that low. He knows enough to tell us how he is feeling and get back to the doctors if need be.

CC I'll set another place at the table. What time do you think you can be here? :0))

Sue, very interesting your comments about depression and suicide. Recently I was listening to a CD that my son compiled for me to play in the car. It was of the Carpenters. Listening to those songs, their plaintive sounds and lyrics, I thought to myself, gee, is it any wonder that Karen Carpenter died so young. If I remember correctly, I think she suicided, didn’t she?

CC You are so right. Many people don’t have anyone to talk to about how they feel. And there’s still this culture that you are “less of a man” if you admit to having bad feelings or suffering from depression. My daughter has recently managed to get her 24 year old son to seek medical help for depression. She recognized the signs because his father (her ex) is bi-polar but her wouldn’t have a bar of it that there was anything wrong with him.

When I was down there recently I noticed his wild mood swings and, when I had a quiet time to be able to talk to him, I pointed out the episodes and the time and circumstances surrounding them and asked him to please, please seek help. I think it made him realize that there was something wrong and I also said to him that his father being untreated early enough was what led to him making some really bad decisions in his life that he’s still paying for.

Allan, we started several veggie gardens here on the property. OH went to a lot of effort and work even growing everything from seed. First time we put the garden in an enclosure which consisted of galv pipe and chicken netting even covered over the top. But the little critters managed to get in and have a feast.

Then he tried pumpkins, zucchini, and beans down the back area and put an electric fence around it but the wild pigs uprooted the thing in one night.

Needless to say, the cost of all this probably would have kept us in store bought veggies for a couple of years, so we've give up. We buy the stuff now from our local store who sources their produce from local growers.

Pam,

We started the vegies for several reasons, although we have grown small crops of things for years.

We have, like everywhere else, water restrictions and decided that if we were to pay for water we may as well use it for something productive.

Also the price of vegies in the supermarkets has been steadily increasing, whilst the quality has been going in the other direction.

As there is now only the two of us at home it made sense to do what we did.

I'm really pleased it's working for you Allan. Unfortunately for us, the wallabies, kangaroos and bandicoots not to mention the feral pigs have made it totally unviable for us.

However, we are fortunate in that we don't have to pay for water. We get it free from the sky and the creek. Although there are times of the year when we have to take it from the river and I don't like that. I'm not sure of it's cleanliness so use it only for washing clothes and toilet flushing. But it's only for a couple of months usually.

We are also fortunate that this is a small house so our power (electricity) bill isn't all that high either. I'm horrified at how much my kids are paying down in Sydney. For one house it's over $600 per quarter, the other over $400 per quarter. I'm unhappy if ours goes over $200 and we use compressors and Gerni's here quite a bit and they're run on Electricity.
