The only aunts and uncles I know - living in the UK - are mum's brothers and sister and sil. They're all lovely but a bit odd:-)) My dad's brother - who is 90 - is such a wonderful man but sadly has dementia now. When we visited in 2008 it was awful to see how much he'd gone down since we had last seen him. He couldn't remember that my father had passed away and we had to tell him again. He was very upset and then an hour later asked where dad was. Mum told him again and again he was upset. After that we just told him that dad would come and visit next time knowing that he would forget. When my cousin asked him if he'd enjoyed our visit he couldn't remember. I felt bad for my brother as this was the first time he'd met Uncle Clifford.

Tec - it's been very cold the last few days. Down to 3 degs last night which is not unknown but unusual for June.

Hi Allan,
It must be great for the children who've never seen snow, to see it on the Stirling Ranges.

I really did have some very odd aunts and uncles. When one aunt had a visitor, she kept newspaper by the front door, to put down where they would tread. Then she would direct them to a chair and put newspaper on the seat before they say down.

I had an elderly uncle who was totally racist - quite a lot of Asian people moved into his area, and he objected. I went to stay for a few days, one evening I kept hearing a sharp crack from upstairs. Going to investigate I discovered him sitting at an upstairs window at dusk with an air rifle. He was taking pot-shots at his new neighbours who were in their garden that backed onto his. I had to wrestle the gun from him, and explain that it was not allowed, and that he could be in serious trouble.

Allan - we've never been that low. We have quite a temperate climate here. Warm to hot summers but mild winters. This winter has been very chilly so far. We do get winds coming off the snowfields and it can be very chilly when they blow down the mountains to the coast.

That must have been unsettling to say the least, Tec. Lucky you didn't get hurt by accident.

Yes, Tec but I let the bus go and waited for the next one!

I was about to leave my bed at 8am (which is still very late for me) but I heard from the radio that it was 2degrees. I have never known it to be that at 8am. It is about as cold as we get here at 5am - and usually July/August. I could feel the cold air in the room, so I snuggled down again for another hour of being cosy, then broke all speed records until I was fully (warmly) dressed - and had turned the aircon ON!

Fine and sunny outside - but I haven't been out to find out how cold it is.

Hello everyone who's been in for the last few days. I haven't been here. Been busy with gardening, cutting down the long grass out the back and trying to get the pots sorted out that are in the front veranda fenced in area. Then yesterday and today I had appointments with Physiotherapist, Pathologist and today was Xray. Hopefully, when my doctor returns from her trip to UK she'll be able to tell me why I have this uncomfortable gut.

Interesting to read about the differing experiences with grandparents. I live with my mother's father and mother from the time I was 3 until 12yrs. My parents divorced and my grandparents were made my guardians. My grandmother was a very strict, humourless person until I was a teenager (and no longer living with her) but my grandfather was wonderful. Taught me to read when I wasn't even at school yet; he was a real joy. My father's mother was lovely but I didn't get to see her all that much due probably to the fact that my parent's were divorced and Dad only got to see us every second weekend. Dad's father died in the world wide pneumonic plague in 1918 when my father was only a baby so I never did get to meet him.

Yes, we don't have a sparkling wine called champagne here now. Apparently the French champagne makers weren't happy about people in other countries using the name and took out an action to stop it.

Hopefully, next time we come onto the thread there will be news of the new baby. Such an exciting time.

I can relate to that woman who was crying and making a fuss and then they suddenly discovered the baby was there. Happened to me with my last child. At 6pm the Sister told the staff to go to dinner because, as she said, "this baby won't be born for hours yet". So off they went. Sister and the only doctor left on floor had to deliver my child alone only 15 minutes later. haha. But I do feel for the poor woman if this was her first. I had my last 3 with no anesthesia by choice but to go that far with your first delivery with no help must have been really frightening for her.

There's a really cold spell down south in Melbourne and Sydney at the moment. Temps are in the minus digits. It's even a bit cool up here. Got down to 8c last night, just under 50f for those who don't have centigrade, but it got up to 26c during the day. It's now 5.35pm and I still don't have a sweater on.

But it is time to go and get dinner started.

Bye all until next time.

Pam.

Well you are not cyber aunts and uncles yet, this baby is determined to stay put.

I have just spoken to my daughters partner. Last night he was turfed out eventually and left her trying to get some sleep, but he went back at 2am. As nothing much was happening, they hooked her up to the drip at 4.30am, but there is still not much happening. The machine is registering contractions, but they are not painful and she is not dilated at all. So it is going to be a long time yet, but the baby is fine at the moment. i suppose the next problem may be that it is all taking too long and the baby shows signs of distress,so a caesarian will be needed. I sincerely hope not, so I need everyone to keep everything crossed. In the meantime we are just at home on standby.

Reading what everyone has posted, I was thinking about my grandparents. My mothers parents were both dead before she even married,so obviously I didn't know them.
On my fathers side, I was the first grandchild and apparently the apple of my grandfathers eye. We lived with them when I was first born, but after a few months, my parents bought a house close by. Apparently I used to spend a large amount of time with my grandfather, but sadly I don't remember it.
He was, however involved in my first memory. I was 3 years8 months old when he died. He had cancer and had been in hospital for an operation, but was brought home by ambulance and put into a bed in the corner of the living room. It was the corner by the toy cupboard, my parents couldn't believe that I would remember, but I described everything so exactly, including the ambulance men carrying him in on a stretcher. My parents had gone to the house to be there when my grandfather came home, so I definitely was there as well.

My grandmother didn't die until 1971,so obviously I remember her well, she was nice, I used to love the meat and potato pie which she made.

Linda - when I saw your name I got all excited. Well back to pacing the floor. I'm really hoping that when I get up in the morning there will be some exciting news.

CC - I'm betting on 6lb. Our little girl is a month early.

Oh we could sure use some of that rain here. I'm getting a bit tired of lugging the water to water the pots. But that will be solved when I get my hose in the next day or so but that depends on the success of the furrow the guys have built working properly to put the new water pipe in the ground. So far it's broken twice but they're sure they'll be able to fix it tomorrow.

It would have been cheaper, quicker and easier to get a man in to do it and pay him but no............. You know how it is.

Linda, I hope your daughter is OK and that it all comes good soon. A month early, you say? Hmmm. 6lbs 3ozs is my guess.

Cheers,
Pam.

Berona Report 29 Jun 2010 11:57

Everything crossed as requested, Linda. I have heard that the babies put a spurt on with the weight in the last few weeks, so it's hard to guess. She might settle down and take another month - or get impatient and decide to make her entrance into the world within the next few days.

I'll have to be in the competition and take a wild guess and say 7lbs exactly. Is there a prize for the winner? Perhaps Allan will pick up something nice from the wheelie bins - but if he wants to post it, forget it - it will never arrive.

Berona Report 29 Jun 2010 12:07

I was lucky to know all of my grandparents, aunts and uncles very well. My parents were both the 'older' ones of large families, so their siblings were like my big sisters and brothers. Mum's youngest siblings - twin girls - are all that is left of them all. They are 85 and both doing quite well.

I'll throw my hat into the ring by saying that the bub will weigh 3.2 Kg.

Berona! I really am hard done by on this thread :0((

Everyone makes me out to be a skinflint!!

I'm just very careful with money. Ask my OH who will tell you that I buy lamb offcuts for the casseroles from the pet food section of the local supermarket.

lolol Allan, I don't believe you for one moment. And I guess that whilst we are poking fun at you it's because we like you.

I've just finished watching the first episode for this season of Packed to the Rafters. Now, it's time for bed. 10.50pm here and it's been a full on day.

Good night all.

Thanks for the welcome. I get a bit homesick for Oz at times, but I guess home's best. This bit of Hampshire is particularly pretty just now. And the sun's been shining for several days at a time. I trust Linda's grandchild has been safely produced by now. Good luck to her/him - and even more to Linda's daughter.
