LindainHerriotCountry Report 15 Jul 2010 21:02

I had an extremely hectic afternoon at the tourist office. it was non stop with fairly complicated enquiries. The phone was ringing off the hook, which was a problem because the rechargeable batteries seem to have given up the ghost,so the stupid thing was cutting off mid conversation. As it kept ringing it never got a chance to recharge. I was trying to sort out a poor chap who kept ringing from Austria, he wanted a weeks worth of B&B starting from Saturday, wouldn't you think he would have sorted things out earlier? Anyway I managed to get him somewhere which is no mean feat at this time of the year. Saturdays are always problematic because we have so many weddings around here.

I thought that I deserved some alcohol,so I have opened a Wolf Blass Cabernet Sauvignon, only yellow label, I can't afford the black.

I am going to watch the watch the Victorian Pharmacy program. ooh it is from the Blist Hill museum where I was on Monday

Hello everyone - hope you are all well. After reading your posts you are all probably exhausted:-))

Linda - Wolf Blass yellow label is good enough. I love a sweet wine so I enjoy a glass of WB yellow label moscato. When we all had dinner at my daughter's the other night they opened a bottle of chardonnay that they bought at a small winery down the coast from us. Chardonnay tends to be pooh-poohed by serious wine drinkers but this one was very smooth.........so we opened another bottle:-))

CC - we rang up our internet provider yesterday and they think it’s the router that’s playing up. They are currently upgrading in our area and have put us on a new plan which is costing us only a little extra a month but will provide faster download and more reliability. Hopefully by next Monday or Tuesday it will be up and running.

We had a very sad incident on our street yesterday. Our street is a long winding one so we tend not to know our neighbours at the other end but where we are it is a fairly tight-knit group. We have lived here over 30 years and very few of the original neighbours have moved. This means our children have grown up together and we all remain interested in what our families are up to. Yesterday we were all sat on the verandah as our son is still visiting. We heard shouting a couple of houses down but couldn’t see what was happening. At first we thought the son – who doesn’t live at home but visits very regularly – was having an argument with his parents. However our son went down to get his jacket from the car and said that the son was standing in the front yard shouting and yelling at no-body in particular. After 20 minutes of this where we debated whether to go down and see if we could help a police car turned up and the young man accompanied by his father quietly went with them. A friend picked up the mother a few minutes later and left in the same direction. As this was the opposite way to the local police station we think he was being taken to a nearby hospital which has a psychiatric ward. It was very sobering because we know that he has always been rather an odd young person but we didn’t realize that things appear to have escalated. I don’t know whether to go down this morning and see if all is ok because they are private people who may not want to feel their business is being discussed by all but then again we’ve know this family for many years.

It is a difficult situation, but you can't ignore it. you could ask if there is anything you can do to help

Won't be long before Eve will be doing her own genealogy research then but in the meantime she better get on with milk research.

I do the administering of the eye drops CC...

He knows it is a doddle Linda - I had mine done a few years back and was as nervous as the first time - I was even apprehensive about drops in my eyes. OH told me he didn't even bother with the the relaxant (very brave). It is actually quite surreal when it is done you feel like the surgery is happening above you - you can watch from your other eye but nothing is felt at all. Course now I can go to the optician and say yep stick the drops in no problem.

Himself has just ordered a book on The Lake Counties - Cumberland and Westmoreland - has ancestry in Cumberland I think.

I complained to GR awhile back - and yes they did reply with "can't replicate the problem" - sometimes it will whizz into my tree and then when I go to look up a person it goes into not interested mode. I did better on dial up - it might've been slow but there was light at the end of the tunnel, whereas now don't know whether I am going to stop at a station, take a break for refreshments, be derailed or reach my destination.

I think it is firefox that is part of the problem - but it only happens on genes. I can do my other ancestry pages, cemetery lookups, BDM research here there and everywhere without having to resort to %^$#)*&.
Hmm wine - I poured quite a lot of Merlot into our casserole the other night - now that went down very well.
The French will not allow us to call our Sparkling wine - Champagne - but they have bottles of Kiwi Cuvée.

Cheers Persey

I use Firefox and don't have any trouble on GR or anywhere else for that matter.

The EU are very protective over the regional products. There was a local cheese company who produced a type of Feta, but eventually they had to change the name and all the marketing for it

Good evening/morning all.

CC, I'm pleased that you have got your CD sorted. I also forgot to thank you for the Genealogical Record that you emailed to me, and also the pp presentation. Beautiful pictures.

Persey, Linda has been able to find part of my maternal family for me, although my maternal grandfather is as big a problem as Clifford, my paternal grandfather.

I put any sort of wine in all my food, mainly the wine that spills from the glass when I am stirring the pot (in more ways than one!!)

Sue I believe that a few years ago Aussies were having ABC parties...Anything But Chardonnay :0))

Linda, after the rain your allotment should be positively bursting with bounteous edible offerings

Good Morning/Evening Everyone,

Hope everyone is well today.
It has been a very wild and windy day, with heavy showers.
I have been engrossed in archive newspaper records online from mid to late 19th century - fascinating. Particular surnames highlighted in the area you are interested in - brilliant.

Good morning Allan.
it is amazing what a drop of rain can do, the onions looked so much better.

The newspapers can be excellent Tec. I found detailed reports for the trial of OH's convict in 1841.

Good evening Linda, a drop of rain can work almost as much wonder as a drop of wine!

Good evening Tec. I hope that both yourself and the Duchess are in fine fettle

Hello Allan:-))

Linda - I will go and see my neighbour and ask if there is anything I can do. I would hate to be seen as a nosy parker but it would be worse to be seen as uncaring.

Good evening CC

Good morning Sue

Whilst clearing up some of my computer files I came across a PP presentation which I forwarded to all staff on my last day of work.

On replaying it, it seemed to sum up the last year on this thread, particulalrly with Allie's passing.

The presentation has sound which is what brings the show to 'life'.

If anyone would like it I will email it to you. I can assure you that it is virus free as I scanned it before playing it the other day
