Hello Marjmay. Welcome to the thread. Have you been here before? I must have missed it. I seem to miss a lot these mornings because I'm not getting out of bed as early as I did - but it's too nice under the covers on a cold morning!

Pop in any time. If no-one is here - it won't be long before you get a response. I look in from time to time and again in the evenings, so feel free to post a comment and someone will answer you soon.
Where is your area. Mine is in western Sydney.

Good evening / Good morning everyone .

I didn't manage to get back here last night . I had a lovely long chat on the phone with my friends who live in Scotland and from that I got sucked into the world of Ancestry.com as I was doing a search for said friend .

So ......I missed all the chit chat about Whitby etc . I have been there , back when I was 12 or so . It is a beautiful place ( and if your photos are recent CC it looks more or less unchanged ) . When I visited , I remember walking through a big arch way , that was the jaw of a Whale , I think it was up near the Abbey ......or am I imagining it ?

CC one of the Whitby pics you sent was of the tower on the pier . I went up that with my Mum and Dad , I don't remember the view , I probably only peeped out of squinting eyes at the time , as I was scared.....lol....it was a windy day and the tower actually wobbles slightly in the breeze .....lol

I've been to Robin Hoods Bay as well . I can't really remember much about the place though . Just that it had a slip way for boats and was very tranquil .

I have a couple of pieces of Whitby Jet jewellery ( broaches ) , that belonged to my G.G.Grandmother .

Thinking about it now , I can't believe we went there and Dad didn't insist on a search for Jet ? ......maybe he did and I've just forgotton.....lol

I think I've watched most of the Coast programmes CC . It is certainly one of my favorites : ))

Walton - On -the Naze is a beautiful place . I lived with my cousin in Brightlingsea for a few months , it's quite close to there if I remember rightly .

Good Evening CC,
Good Evening Amanda,

Hope you are both well today.

Thanks again for the pics CC, they are beautiful.

We had a caravan holiday once at Walton-On-The-Naze, many years ago, 1960s I think. We lived at Billericay at the time and I was home on leave, so we took a break there - very nice too.

My OH had a chunky Victorian Whitby jet necklace that she inherited from her Grandmother. She never wore it as it was too heavy, so my daughter has it now, and she does wear it as she likes chunky jewelery.

Today I went to the local auction - underneath a bench with a load of junk were two record cases. I had to investigate, and am so glad I did. There is a total of 31 LPs from early 60s through to late 70s. All in mint condition, covers and records - look as if they've never been played. Among them are early 60s Beatle double albums, Elton John, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Dave Clark Five, Carpenters, Rod Stewart, etc etc etc. I know some of them are collectors items, and given the condition they were well worth buying. I had a bargain.

Hello Tec : ))

Sounds as if you had quite a find there ! Do you have a proper old record player ......I used to have a reasonable record collection but I sold them all years ago ( except the Beach Boys ones .....I couldn't part with them ....lol ).

Will you be keeping the LPs or selling them on ?

I've never been to Billericay ( but I would like to one day as one of my G.Grandmothers came from there ) .

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 29 Jul 2010 22:30

Hi Amanda,

Yes I do have a proper turntable record player. I shall keep most of the records, just a few I'm not interested in. I'm fascinated by the graphics on the covers as much as anything.
I was discussing my find with my daughter on the phone and she was leaping up and down telling me how much I could sell the LPs on E-bay for, but I don't want to do that. She would sell the cats grandmother on E-bay if she could lol.

My fathers family were Essex people, most from Billericay, Great Burstead areas. Billericay used to be a quiet little place, but now seems to have been swallowed up by Basildon.

Hello lovely people:-))

Hello Marj - I live about 5 minutes from your auntie's place. Small world isn't it. Welcome to our thread.

Wasn't jet worn as mourning jewellery my Queen Victoria? I love Whitby as I said before. Robin Hood's Bay is very nice too. Walking down to the water is good but walking back up again takes longer. We had to stop several times and look in the little shops:-))

Good evening Amanda, CC and Tec

A warm welcome to Marj if you are still looking in. I'm in WA

CC pics were amazing , but I now have a chap claiming to be from MI5 wanting to know where I got the pics of that Top Secret establishment from.

Of course I never told him, at laest not until he threatened me with the thumbscrews :0))

My very first time away from home without my parents aws on a school trip to Staithes. We stayed in a camp there for a week. I had very fone memories of that camp so before leaving the UK I took and the children back to Staithes as we were staying fairly close.

What a disappointment, nothing like I remembered it!

Amanda2003 Report 29 Jul 2010 22:39

Hello Sue ........ I hope it's a pleasent morning in your part of the world : ))

Yes , I think that old Queen Victoria is the probably the reason that Whitby Jet took off the way it did . Apparently my G.Grandmother was the same height as Queen Victoria and by all accounts was very pleased to pass on that pointless piece of information to everyone she met ! .....lol

I doubt I'd cope very well with the steep slopes of Whitby very well these days ...... it was a long time ago that I visited the area.

Tec ......my brother has a massive record collection . All originals and by countless bands / solo artists ....... he started in the 70s and has been adding to it ever since !

SueMaid Report 29 Jul 2010 22:45

Hello Allan - no place is the same as you remember it to be.

CC - thank you for the Stonehenge and Bath photos. They're two of my favourite places. Well I have to say that I love so many places in the UK and can't wait to visit again.

Amanda2003 Report 29 Jul 2010 22:46

Morning Allan ...... I hadn't seen you there as I was busy typing : ))

Going back to fondly remembered places can be a massive disappointment can't it .
As a child we had several holidays in Cornwall that I remembered with much happiness . I made the mistake of going back as an adult ( with my four children , two of which where in pushchairs at the time ) , Shoving a pram up hill is no fun and trying to keep them all in order was a nightmare .
Everywhere looked wrong and massively commercialised . And I won't even mention Lands End !!! lol

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 29 Jul 2010 22:52

Good Morning Sue,
Good Morning Allan,

I also hope the day looks promising for you both.

Allan, With your ability to escape the thread, I don't M15 will hold you for long - just don't jump out the window as you'll likely land in the Thames murky waters.

Amanda, My OH half has a huge collection of LPs - mostly Sinatra, Dean Matin, Perry Como, Sammy Davies Jnr, Tony Bennet - The Rat Pack, Billy Eckstien, Ella Fitzgerald etc.
One day I would like to get everything onto CDs, but still have fun playing LPs.
Incidently, I met all the Beach Boys a long time ago.

Did you Tec ? Wow....to have actually met them !

I went to see them live back in the late 70s when they did a tour and played in London . They are my favorites : )))
